Stay with me for a minute. A lot of comics in the 90s were inserting rape randomly in a bid to look "serious" and it comes off as poor in taste or retarded. Garth doesn't hate superheroes so much as he hates what they've done to comics.
When he was growing up, comics was a much more diverse place. You had fantasy comics, War stories, horror comics, spy fiction, a lot of variety of genre. He doesn't hate Superheroes as a concept. He hates that they're pretty much the only genre of comic that has any mainstream success, and the only thing keeping the medium alive.
