If you were gonna go this route, MK vs. DC would have been a better one though still not likely when cartoons and movies are more casual than fighting games, a genre that has been niche since about the year 2000 when arcades were dead and FPS and party games dominated popular console multiplayer

Some of Bengus' art was based off reference to American comics.A youtuber went over a few pieces of art that seem to be what they were referencing for some of the Capcom game poses and art. I think Michael Golden was one of the artists used for some poses.
I always thought Ron Lim and Infinity Gauntlet were heavily referenced too, given how similar Bengus' Thanos looks like compared to Lim's Thanos.

No, even in the mid 90s at their peak of popularity fighting games were still somewhat niche. A kid was more likely to know about Spider-Man because they watched the cartoon, had the toys, read the comics, etc, Spider-Man in the 90s was one of the most central American pop culture figures in terms of kid popularity. Comic books, were still something plenty regular kids grew up with in the 80s and 90s.

And hell, the litany of Marvel games that weren't fighters, would also be more likely than fighting games, which again were more niche. Average gamers didn't play much beyond Mortal Kombat at the time
