Well DC was pushing for greater success in the Indian market. Looks like they succeeded.
Superman has a hard time going abroad in other places due to his close association with the USA, which isn't a very popular country at the moment.

Also China, the biggest international market for movies, is switching over to mainly just enjoying their domestic films. This is the main reason why Gunn's Superman isn't favored to make more money than Man of Steel.

Really it's about nature vs nurture with Superman's parents, and how kindness can be cool and rebellious in a society which finds it trite.
