SUPERMAN DCU
SUPERMAN DCU
md5: 45236ff257c936fd324a2e600b2de897๐Ÿ”
Superman is without a doubt the most unapologetic true comic book movie the modern era has ever seen. It is unashamed of what it is, and the fact that it embraces even the most weird of DC material deserves nothing short of praise.

With all of that said, does Superman 2025 have anything original worth adding to comic canon?

Is it the first COPE-less superhero movie? Even '89 Batman and '78 Superman had bits of COPE.

>Superman is without a doubt the most unapologetic true comic book movie the modern era has ever seen.
True, felt like it tossed you right into an issue, there were some parts that were just ridiculous (in a good way) that it gave no explanation for. And that's the way to do it unless you want an extra 20 min of exposition on top of the runtime. Which they said they were trying to avoid.
>does Superman 2025 have anything original worth adding to comic canon?
No cause all the plot points were lifted from comic canon. Unless you count Lex coming up with an entire sequence of battle commands that he screams over a mic while sweating autistically , then yeah that would be worth adding imo kek

It kinda had the "Invincible" approach were it just tells the audience to accept how weird the world is at face value without a shit ton of setup.
>No cause all the plot points were lifted from comic canon.
What about The Raptors? I know Lex has had armed goons in the past but I can't remember if we've ever given an official name to them. Was nice seeing Otis again though. And I know Ultraman's mask was pretty much Doomsday's containment suit but I have to wonder if Crime Syndicate/Earth 3 Ultraman should wear that too given that he's weakened by yellow suns

Yeah I've been saying this but it's easily the movie that feels the most like a superhero comic. Doesn't even feel like it's a negative. Genuinely it feels like it could've been a 4-6 issue arc of a longrunning comic.

>With all of that said, does Superman 2025 have anything original worth adding to comic canon?
I like tying the Engineer, Planet/Stormwatch, and maybe the Authority into Superman.

Couldn't tell em apart from any random taskforce you'd find in a comic desu

> I have to wonder if Crime Syndicate/Earth 3 Ultraman should wear that too given that he's weakened by yellow suns
I want to say we'll never see Ultraman but with all the weird stuff they threw into this, who knows? Though I think we'll see the clone return before that.

I hope Gunn doesn't direct the next one, he did good with this one in that all the characters are themselves but directing Superman was obviously not a voluntary choice and you could tell he was venting his snarky/cynical writing through Justice Gang. Thank fuck he didn't stick Whedon humor in though

Do you see a redemption for him then? Considering Metamorpho joined the gang in the end , I wonder if Clark's movies are gonna involve him converting the anti-heroes/villains. Kinda like they've been doing in the comics last I looked (is banshee still on the side of good?)

The more I think about it, the more I like it. It really did feel like a comic storyline in live action. They should've made the movie poster a classic comic cover.

The first I ever paid attention to Mr Terrific was Fatal Five. he was pretty sweet in that one. I'm glad he was a standout character in this.

I would like to see Bizarro World get used in the Gunnpoint Universe. I really think there's money in a second Justice League movie being against a Bizarro Justice League (even though Bizzaro League are just a bunch of Bizarro Supermans and not Bizarro versions of the other members.)

That was a pretty big waste, why even include Lombard if you don't have a gag of him trying to prank Clark and it boomerangs on him? Ron Troupe didn't even get a line I'm pretty sure.

It will be nice if we can get more fun, wacky Jimmy Olsen stories.

Idk... Supergirl, Krypto, Lobo, Peacemaker, Guy Gardner, Metamorpho, Mr Terrific... Gunn has a great eye for highly enjoyable characters. Such a fun group of supporting characters. And we will be definitely getting Hal and John, Batman and Robin, Wonder Woman. Who knows what kind of supporting characters he'll want to throw in there.

There's whatever is going to happen with Sgt Rock, Clayface, Creature Commandos, Mr Miracle, Blue Beetle. It just feels like a lot of eclectic pockets of DC. It gives the comics a lot of options for "synergy"

I said this in another thread but I predict the DCU will be a lot of projects that do exist in the same universe and will crossover frequently, but also function as standalone experiences. doing it this way takes pressure off the audience to watch everything, they can just focus on the stuff that catches their interest.

Krypto is stupid. The amount of screen time spent on a misbehaving dog that could have been spent on character and organic world building over the constant exposition is part of where this film went off the rails.

Gunn said they avoided spoilers for any future movies being in the after credits for this reason, don't want to force everything to be connected and possibly build too much hype for a movie you're not directing. It makes sense. After credits stuff became annoying after the first avengers.

Well that's what I'm saying, nothing really that I'd incorporate. Was there anything new that stood out? Raptors were meh, pocket dimension is just discount phantom zone, kaiju monster is just that. Lex having a monke army was funny though.

Otis is a Lexcorp henchman that originally debuted in the Reeves film and returned here. He's been in a few comics, sometimes as a security guard, other times a digital assistant

>Swamp Thing

I disagree. Yea it just roles with crazy logicless alien shit or super science but it comes at the cost of characters and story. Like a dessert with a lot of really cool frosting only to realize there's almost no cake.

>Supergirl being a drunk party girl
He's using woman of tomorrow as a reference. She's drinking to cope with the fact that she's lost everything (Gunn's words).

>The social media haters plot
It's just the kind of sneaky shit Lex would pull. Also fuck you the monkeys were great

>The edgy superteam that kills
Obviously meant to contrast Clark and his efforts to not kill anyone

>Nathan Fillion
He got the most laughs at my theater...I liked him

>The Punk rock thing
Yeah that's true. Clark likes metal anyway

>The Super-Harem bit
Oh fuck yeah you're right. Absolute worst part of the movie. I wouldve only cringed a little if it was a one off but the fact that they kept bringing it up and how unnecessary it was made it seem like a fetish insert. Eugh

King even consulted on Superman, another reason to dislike it. The social media plot really plays into Gunn and King's persecution complexes. Gunn when he got cancelled and fired from Disney, Tom King when people bring up what he did in the Middle East (even though he'll brag about it given the opportunity.)
