And I think that the creator was technically unreasonable from the start because their entire concept hinged on the idea of getting access to all these other media properties to literally zombify just to prop up the original characters they had written in Pibby, an Ursula type inkwell villainess, and a Robin type sidekick all teaming up so they could survive together for a "Walking Dead" amount of time where each of them would gradually go through arcs of realizing they are more than their archetypes or whatever, getting battle-hardened and altered designs. Just entirely too ambitious with a little shitty idea that didn't have any legs outside the animated short even if they had somehow wrangled this ultimate crossover to compete with (notoriously dogshit story) Ready Player One.

That's the million dollar question, really. They clearly did have some stuff planned out regarding the arcs for their own OCs, and there did seem to be some thematic purpose to utilizing IP over generic forms for the non-focus characters. Like, they didn't have the show be about Dora, Ursula, & Robin teaming up to defeat the hivemind queen that had taken control of Boots, so there MUST have been more reason than just wanting their own characters to be the stars, simply to give them a slightly favorable interpretation. But idk, I haven't been following it as closely as other people because I was never all that interested in the idea ever coming to fruition.

The biggest issue I have with how Dodge handled Pibby is that he's wasn't making it as a love letter but as this power trip for his main OC
I mean her storyline just isn't earned and you the viewer are expected to accept seeing her be this pillar of light and hope for all your favorite other characters you know and loved that became yes men or cannon fodder for the big bad Pibby must slain "no matter the cost".
And honestly, if this was yet another crossover comic like the ones in Deviantart I would read it a bit out of morbid curiosity but as a show in television this was going to be a mess and even more with someone so incompetent like Dodge calling the shots.
