Because I like the character?
I don't even get why Gunn put a target on his back. It's clearly the Grant Morrison version of the character, and one of the first things Morrison had the character do was kill a vengeful incel who was terrorizing a town. I don't really understand how he became the scapegoat. It just felt like Gunn was trying to preempt the fictitious career of the character who had a headstart in penetrating mainstream pop culture.

Gunn is a lot like Tom King in that he writes wildly off-beat takes on characters (i.e.: taking a wikipedia summary of the comics and filling them with sex, vulgarity, and all but pointing at the screen and calling them, their motives, and designs completely stupid) and generally gets away with it because the characters he bastardizes aren't A-Listers. Even if the comics he's taking from are completely at odds with his way of reinterpreting them (pic related).
The difference is that Guns writing is not a confessional to being a glowie faggot that feels bad for torturing sand niggers but simultaneously resents those same sand niggers for not letting him save them.
