It's really not too surprising here honestly, I think Lightyear was a bigger fumble. Shit like Elio, despite having a boy as protagonist isn't meant to appeal to them like something little kids find cool like superheroes or more action oriented properties. It's meant to be Pixar's answer Ghibli, equivalent of lower stake, slice of life movies, its been their aproach to non sequel movies for the past half decade or so without really testing the waters for that shit. It's kinda like their other movies where you have characters like Russel, Carl, or Linguini who aren't meant to be cool or whatever but there's enough fantastical elements in the movies that keep the audience entertained. I honestly think stories like this that are just male coming of age stories and not musicals really are a harder sell for little boys. They want more cool action than stories like Elio or Treasure Planet which aren't really focused on that. Stuff like Big Hero 6 and How to Train Your Dragon sold better as male coming of age stories since they were advertised as being cool and action-packed with all the flying around and shit and also had iconic mascots that were both cool and cute. The musical aspect is a buff for animated movies so Coco did well, but any film that doesn't will need to have something else to keep people's interest. Even one of the directors of Treasure Planet said during the previews he realized the women coming with their daughters had basically nothing in the film to get them excited and said fathers (the film's second target demo after little boys) weren't even coming to the movie in the first place.

Well yeah, Pixar is an American studio the most blood you'll ever see in an American animated family movie is like a little droplet of blood or a nosebleed. I think there's an important distinction in character design when going for boys: Do you want the character hot or cute? You can do a daring synthesis between the two, but these two options generally indicate the "role" and behavior of the character.

If Didney were smart they'd rush Elio to streaming ahead of schedule, put it up with a fresh reasonable spurt of marketing to let people know it's up there and maybe get some more eyes on the film whilst people are still somewhat aware of its existence.
We're nearing the tail-end of the theatrical run now and the local showings I'm looking at in London are entirely empty, literally no seats booked. Putting it up on streaming at this point is unlikely to hurt the box office take, but might get some more subscriptions from people who were expressly waiting for the film to come to streaming.
I have a feeling if they stick to their regular schedule and quietly shart it out onto streaming in September or October everyone will have forgotten the film even exists by then and it won't make much of a splash even on streaming.
