I know movie studios are notoriously creatively bankrupt, but I don't understand this trend of constantly digging up the graves of these IPs that no kid actually gives a shit about, like Smurfs or Garfield. It's not like they're household names like Mickey Mouse that everyone knows, literally no one cares about these things

>>149433526
garfield has the kind of ironic and nihilistic humor that modern audiences are comfortable with, the smurfs are too wholesome for the modern era, and any attempt to modernize them just comes across as cringe or forced, they should play them completely straight and make 2D animated specials in a vein similar to Moomin every so often

I wish this whole damn scenario would just fucking stop already. They need to quit try to make modern kids movies of franchises that died too many decades ago and no kid has heard of or gives a shit about. They need to fucking stop it already with shit like Yogi Bear movie, Underdog movie, Pink Panther, all of those 60s through 80s forgotten old franchises that no kid is even mildly interested in, and was even before the time of most of the parents.

Garfield is still kind of relevant since the comic never ended, and there have been a few different animated series keeping the title on life support, plus the holiday specials keep coming around every year.

1. A focused, smarmy protagonist is easier to attract audiences than a giant cast of one-note characters.
2. Cats are more marketable (maybe the most marketable).
3. Smurfs are really gay. As in they're overly caring, happy, pacifists, loving, sensitive, and kind of boring. By comparison, Garfield is kinda cool cause he's a smartass and kicks Odie off the table.

Smurfs are less visually interesting ponies with a way worse gimmick (cutie marks vs. U GOTTA BE SMURFIN' ME).

The aging boomers in charge have really lost all concept of time in the last couple decades. They do not understand that a nostalgic childhood movie for parents would be the Spongebob Movie or Monsters Inc.

Not a 60s character that had some reruns sporadically in the late 80s too. Current parents likely have no fucking clue what the hell Underdog is outside of a really stupid Disney movie from 2004ish.

For all intents and purposes, a US based studio that primarily cares about a US audience first, making a movie that depends on US ticket sales needs to stick to a franchise that mostly Americans give a damn about.

Spending hundreds of millions on a franchise only Belgium gives a shit about is the definition of wasting money for no good reason.

Lost Village made all its money overseas. It actually was pretty succesful overseas. They don't care about the US Market, we're just a bonus. There's a reason this movie has the Smurfs going to France and not LA or New York.

>On June 11 and 12, 2024, a fourth season of the series was confirmed, and the third season was announced to premiere in the summer of 2024 on Nickelodeon, later specified as September 3, 2024. In addition, new concepts for Smurfs shorts and spinoffs are also in the works, particularly a new Johan And Peewit series titled The Tales Of Johan & Peewit.
