God I hope not. My experience is
>go where i'm told (school/work)
>go home
>consume entertainment to soothe the pain of having done the first thing
>get a poor amount of sleep because of the lingering stresses
>repeat
I never understood how people have life experiences, don't you have to recover? y'know.. -all the time?-

Basing a character almost or even entirely on yourself wasn't ever considered something embarrassing from the storytelling standpoint up until that god damned piece Star Trek fan fiction came into being.
Modern self-insertion deserves to be made fun not because it's self-insertion, but because most modern writing is shit and people who are shit at it nowadays can only ever write about themselves.

Yeah, that's why everyone is making movies about the time their parents divorced.

>Great art draws on real experience.
True.

>There’s a difference between an OC made to date cartoon crushes and Dostoevsky drawing on his prison time
True. There’s also a difference between James Bond and Perry the Platypus.

>true self-inserts are for wish-fulfillment
Mostly true, wishes may vary.

>Fandom reduces personal storytelling to self-insertion
Giving fandom too much credit here. If it were only a problem with fanart, it wouldn’t be a problem.

I'm sorry to all the nepo babies but I can't just go to jail on my own volition.

Part of the problem is that since all entertainment is localized in upper-crust California, everyone's life experiences over there come from a very boring and similar place. Everyone working in the animation industry is the exact same fucking person and they all consume the exact same type of media because it's all just a bunch of people who know each other and lived the same exact life.
Oh wow, you didn't fit in with other kids because you were so quirky? Oh wow, you drew a lot of pictures? Oh wow, you liked anime and manga and video games? Oh, AND you have bizarre first-world mental health issues that you just need to put into everything you make? You're SO unique.

Not really. Great art, shit art, all can be self-insertion, because self-insertion is a way to tell a story. It is very common in wish-fulfillment pieces of art, but it is NOT what makes them self-insertion.

You understand people move to California to enter the entertainment industry right?
Angry loners also don’t tend to work well in team projects like animation

said 'damned star trek fan fiction' is literally the face of bad self-inserts -to this day-
i wouldn't use the words 'up until'

>>149448919
desu when that started happening, i realized i knew NOBODY with non-divorced parents. at this point it's kind of unheard of, I can't expect them to depict the past
I mean I want them to
>>149449028
I thought for sure it was going to sort of decentralize, now that anyone can make a professional video on a laptop, everyone has greenscreens and home recording studios, people are doing actual hollywood stuff from home.. you'd expect it, but no.. it's still there.
>liking anime and videogames
hey that got you shit where we lived. in not-california. that is a legit thing to base things on.
