Its not that big, but its clearly a tier 4 city by the sheer density instead of the town it was in the early years, it just also holds a lot of nature within its limits that would normally be unincorporated.

the East Coast doesn't have any Sonoran desert areas or canyons like Springfield Gorge either

but Springfield was settled by Hans Sprungfeld in 1796, so it couldn't be further west than the eastern extent of French Louisiana (which was huge and ran from Mexico to Canada) if the town was always in, and founded as part of, the United States, and it couldn't be any further south than the flat bit bordering Louisiana (the state) and Mississippi (also the state) that runs across through Alabama, Georgia and Florida, because everything south of that line was established to be a Spanish possession in 1795 by the US-Spanish Treaty of Madrid

Everything about Jedidiah Springfield reads as west of the Ohio but East of the Mississippi. Doesn't fit for New England or Appalachia, and Springfields state is canonically a northern aligned state. Illinois would fit in here.

also no, Tejas wasn't a state of the Union or even part of the Union until 1845 and was another country from 1836, prior to which it was part of Mexico, which rules out Texas as Springfield was founded in the US in the 1790s (and only moved five miles when the whole town was moved)

It would have to be one of the Border States or the Upper South because it had split allegiances during the American Civil War. Given the frontiersman circlejerking around Jedediah Springfield, that would indicate that Springfield is in a Western state that was not part of the original 13 Colonies. We also can infer that it's not in Missouri because of Abe Simpson's refusal to recognize that state. So that would narrow it down to

>Kentucky - Border State in the West that had split loyalties during the Civil War (pic related)
>Kansas - Union state that nevertheless had some pro-Confederate sentiments due to the influx of proslavery militants during the Bleeding Kansas period
>Tennessee - Confederate state that nonetheless had strong pro-Union sentiments to the point of having more Southern Unionists under arms than any other Confederate state

It's a former slave state (the Simpsons are literally at least partially descended from Southern planters) that furnished Confederate troops during the Civil War so that would pretty much eliminate any Union state that isn't Kentucky, Maryland, and Missouri.

in The PTA Disbands the Springfield Brigade at Fort Springfield were clearly Union and attacked and killed greyshirts

The Color Yellow does unambiguously state that Virgil was a slave in Springfield - and this is implied to be the same Springfield - which pushes the town a lot further West than it should be given the founding date of 1796

but if it was founded after the Louisiana Purchase and Springfield/Shelbyville's expedition only set out in 1796 but founded the town inexplicably like 10 years later, they could be as far west as Montana or as far south as Louisiana, but unless Jebediah Springfield got SUPER lost and was incredibly old (given he was already an adult man with a career as a notorious pirate when he met George Washington), it couldn't be anywhere in the former Republic of Texas or Second Mexican Republic except maybe the two 1819 portions of the Spanish cession (and even that requires that it took 23 years for the colonists to found Springfield and Shelbyville)

Abe does say "I'll be in the cold, cold ground before I recognize Missouri" in Homer Badman, which may imply a Kansas or Oklahoma panhandle locale for Springfield, with Abe remembering the Missouri Compromise as a bad thing for his ancestors

but then they went to Canada anyway so it's possible that's an entirely different Springfield and (most) of the Springfield descendants of the other characters in that story simply come from very large family trees (Mr Burns graduated Yale in 1913, so that was possibly his father, or an uncle he knew; his mother appears to be vaguely southern based on her accent)

>in The PTA Disbands the Springfield Brigade at Fort Springfield were clearly Union and attacked and killed greyshirts

The fact there were Confederate soldiers even in the vicinity of Fort Springfield would indicate that it was in a Border State with split loyalties (i.e. Springfield voted to remain in the Union, Shelbyville voted for secession, further contributing to the bad blood between the two) since the war was almost entirely fought within the slave states. With the exception of Gettysburg, no major battles took place in a free state. While smaller incursions did periodically occur (most notably Morgan's Raid), nearly of these were mounted with cavalry (relying the ability to rapidly deploy and withdraw by horseback as needed) and the Confederates portrayed in The PTA Disbands are all on foot.
