Only seen the 2003 Turtles and the original 3 movies

Is this series good or do you need to have seen the 2012 show
I tried the first few issues and it was fun so far

IDW is its own thing, not tied to any of the shows or movies. It's kind of a mix of a little bit of everything TMNT from the original Mirage stuff, to the 87 cartoon, to the Archie comics, and a bunch of other stuff.

/co/ repeats a lot of memes about which parts are good or bad, but the first 50 issues are generally agreed upon as being pretty good. The next 51-100 are going to be a mixed bag. The crossovers and mini-series and TMNT Universe comics are generally alright, and if you're reading them in collection form, you won't have to worry about reading order, which is notoriously bad otherwise.

Everything leading up to and including City at War is a fucking trainwreck. Everything afterwards is divisive, because the writers changed, but certain behind the scenes editorial stuff for a later big fucking event effectively screwed everything up for about 30 issues. 101 ownwards is usually called the Mutant Town arc and /co/ seethes about it, but it's... about on par with the rest of the run, for better and worse. Because there's a big impending event the story doesn't get to really go anywhere for 3 dozen fucking issues.

Then Armageddon Game happens. It fucking sucks. So bad, I'd almost say you should just skip it, if not for a few key events that happen. They nuke ex machina a big supernatural problem away, and nearly every character introduced in the arc fucks off right after. Everything following the arc is a wet fart.

The current relaunched run with Jason Aaron as the writer is somehow worse than everything mentioned above.

Also, for the record, don't believe the hype: The Last Ronin is extremely overrated.

I just asked since Bishop and Hun are in it from what I was told so it seems like it does base itself on the shows

Bishop and Hun predate the shows, but they're different characters in the IDW comic.

Meant the 2012 show. Hun and Bishop are closer to their 2003 cartoon counterparts, with some big differences.

Jason Aaron is bad but no writer can beat Sophie Campbell turning an action book into a boring gay slice of life and making his fanfiction canon in the book, NOTHING.

Go re-read the Mutant Town comics. You're regurgitating memes for stupid reasons. There's plenty of action and fights throughout the entire fucking thing.

>Is this series good
FUCK no. It starts off good, but it's nothing more than a trap. By issue 50 it starts shitting the bed so hard, in such profound, unprecedented ways, that it hardly matters if it was ever good. You could practically write a college thesis on this comic's perpetual downward spiral.

Just when you think the comic hits rock bottom, it brings out the shovel and starts digging.

>or do you need to have seen the 2012 show
It's completely self-contained. If you want 2012 content, it had it's own line of comics that were okay for what they were.

Today I found out there was a Nightwatcher comic.
Went to read it only to find out it's not Raph in the armor. It's some broad.
Some Lesbian broad
And there are mutants living amongst humans. And the comic treats it as a racism allegory.
I was pretty sad.

Do we really need another new character when this comic is already bloated? Why not just write that Karai secretly create her own clan? At least she finally get some story development.

Many writers don't a shit about the turtles, and the turtles only suffer more character assassination with each new story.

I'm convinced you didn't read this comic at all. There isn't a single thing in Mutant Town that's as egregiously awful as City of War, or Armageddon Game, or the total shitshow that is Aaron's current run.

That's interesting, he's using the Ninja Tribunal symbol. I wonder if that's intentional or if the artist just flipped the Foot Clan symbol upside down without realising it had been done before?

/co/ is full of people who don't read comics, but hear shit in other threads or through twitter screencaps, and then permanently integrate that into their opinions. Waltz was mediocre at the highest points of his run on TMNT, and most of that was being carried by usually good art. Campbell wasn't actually that bad, and probably would have done a lot better if Waltz stayed gone, Armageddon Game never happened, and Campbell knew he was going into a 50 issue commitment, instead of setting up a mini plot that had to be dragged out until some retard came back to derail the entire comic for another year.

Tom Waltz is a pussy who can't write a plot about "Dark Leo" killing people in City Fall arc. Even in The Last Ronin, Mikey cann't kill main villain.
