That's what I mean. Clearly people knew foreign media wasn't "so foreign" you couldn't be entertained by it, they wouldn't imitate it if that was the case.

I think in cases like sentai, Saban knew white kids wouldn't watch something with dubbed Asian actors.

Godzilla became so important to japanese identity that parents could easily explain to their kids it was a japanese movie.

Anime didn't have that same degree of subtext. I'm sure suits even pointed out the confusion of how anime characters don't even look Asian.

I don't think many can fathom just how much tension there was with Japan due to their booming economy and taking over so much of the American market with cars and tech. If you were working in those fields with a US company there's a good chance you might've lost your job due to that, and those were the people who would be parents to the kids in the 90's.
Here's a compilation of TV new stories with the first about the upcoming Sailor Moon launch. There's a lot of loaded phrasing about how Japan has already been dominating electronics and how many cars in the US are now Japanese, and how importing these properties will be a nightmare for American toy companies.
https://youtu.be/PhwVcIR1aQs?si=QxZYdDX-TAPlhN2A
It probably doesn't help that Bandai's first pitch video to US investors was clearly made by an ESL and straight up spoils the reincarnation reveal and how the senshi all die at the end of the first season.

It's funny, because in the 60's and 70's, while dubs weren't great, they were relatively faithful and kept them notably Japanese, with Japanese names, or at least wouldn't pretend the events weren't in Japan. Not even just toku, but other Japanese kid's films that would be used as low budget television for networks to air.
What happened in the late 80's, there started to be a shift against this. One reason I heard was that dubs of tokusatsu were considered cheap filler, so when there was a push for higher budget original shows in the late 80's it was one of the things networks stopped airing. Godzilla '84's failure in America might be another reason why. Along with growing sentiment against Japan in the 80's because of their booming industry.
Remember, there was a big gap between importing Godzilla Heisei movies between Biollante and the rest, and that's largely due to the '98 American movie pushing them to release them for promotion.

it's because actually having to rewrite stuff costs money. direct translation more or less cuts scriptwriters out of the equation.
Part of it is adapters ultimately have to SELL the product. all the high-minded ideals of integrity fly out the window when broadcasters refuse to buy and air your production. The more money you spend on licensing and translating something, the more incentive you have to water it down so more people will like it and you can recoup your investment. The last thing a TV producer wants is to spend millions adapting a show only to have it tank in the ratings or worse, get rejected by every broadcaster.
back in the 60s broadcasters were more willing to take risks on weird shows because it cost them pennies if something failed. by the 80s though there was so much money in television they couldn't take those risks out. it's why Fox and later the rise of cable was such a big deal; it broke the TV stagnation that had set in for much of the 70s and 80s.

>>149471686
Apparently thatโ€™s not actually true. That frame is actually from an animated AD that never aired. One of the guys who made it sold the storyboards for it on eBay years ago and explained this whole thing
>In 1992, while producing Conan the Adventurer and X-Men for Graz Entertainment, Meugniot was asked to storyboard, produce and direct animated segments for three Aliens toy commercials, done in support of a new Aliens toyline. The trio of ads were all concerned with a team of space marines defending a space station from an Alien attack. The animation was done by Akom, using the same team that did the Conan titles. However, a new snorkel camera had come to the attention of the commercials' live action producer, allowing him to film the toys with unprecedented clarity, so he decided to use this footage instead of the completed animation in the final cut of the commercials.

>The shown frame captures from finished animation have sparked an internet myth that there was an "Operation Aliens" animated pilot, which doesn't exist.
Technically, there still might be a Operation Aliens pilot out there produced separately from his company that he doesnโ€™t know about, but if it does exist it doesnโ€™t look like that

maybe on legacy media platforms because their audience consists of about six retirees. but the internet offers a wider variety of content than mankind has ever been able to experience. The issue now is more one of accessibility; it's so easy to find what you want when you want it that people dig themselves into their own little holes that they never have to come out of, totally isolated from anything else. during the TV era you were stuck with whatever was on which forced you to watch stuff you might not otherwise watch, which allowed you to develop a broader palette.

This is from an eBay estate sale of a former DiC employee (whose name I cannot fucking find) and it TECHNICALLY wasnโ€™t for a Metroid shown, itโ€™s was to be part the Super Mario Bros Power Hour (which you can see in the corner) which was the original concept for The Super Mario Bros Super Show!. In addition to the Mario and Zelda segments of Super Show, Power Hour would also included California Games, Castlevania, Double Dragon, and the previously mentioned Metroid but none of these four ever made it past the concept art stage (although Double Dragon did get itโ€™s own show years later). Anyway hereโ€™s the promo images for the other intended segments.

Basically a lot of those older dubs were done as cheap network filler. When they became tied to toy launches and big product tie-ins, they started getting heavier localization, because more was at stake from different companies.
The idea behind the Sailor Moon localization wasn't to sell the show itself, but the dolls Bandai had an IP they wanted to move (ironically the dolls wouldn't even be the same)

Sailor Moon had a ton of wild fucked up shit happen in it, I really don't understand why people think it's some squeaky-clean show. There's suicide, torture, incest, it's kind of fucked up and Takeuchi actually wanted it to be even MORE fucked up but got stopped by her editors. The "being a magical girl is suffering" thing that Madoka did wasn't actually that notable at all, the only thing it did was condense the story down and push the initial reveal forward to a point where normalfag audiences saw those parts.

The scene where it happened is theorised to be a precursor to the infamous Porygon Incident a few years later. The screen was filled with rapid strobing effects, and hundreds of kids reported feeling ill after seeing it, with some even staying back from school the next day.
It was all brushed off as simply being a psychological reaction to seeing their heroes fucking die in front of them in a brutal manner. Electric Soldier Porygon, on the other hand, was in the altogether tame Pokemon anime, and that episode absolutely did not have any psychologically harrowing scenes. That's what made them pull their heads out of their asses regarding epilepsy.

Naoko didnโ€™t plan on the series running for so long. The idea was to just be a one season thing and then move on.
The live action series basically follows an ending closer to what she wanted. The series ends on the first arc and thatโ€™s basically it, the girls have normal lives after being wished back

the manga ran behind the anime. the ending of S1 was written months in advance, Toei didn't think the show would last past one season so they wrote for all the girls to die in the end. it wasn't until towards the end of the season they realised they had a ratings hit on their hands, but by that point they had already written and animated the final episodes and couldn't change them.

I know very little about Saint Seiya but just from perusing the comments under the video itโ€™s not half-bad as an adaptation apparently (but again I have to stress I donโ€™t know that much about SS). it's more likely that they both agreed early on to kill them off, and then as the series went on (before Takeuchi drew the chapter, but after Toei animated the episode) they realised killing them off was a mistake. Toei was too far in to change what they had made but Takeuchi wasn't.

That kill off in the anime was done only because Toei wasn't sure if they will continue the show past the first act, hence the lame ass "resurrection plus mind wipe and they regressed back to how they were type of ending"

But the show got greenlighted to go on so there's not much they could do to change that finale.

That's interesting. Looks like California Games would have been more comedy focused, it would be nice variety to all the other adventure shows. I would have loved to see a non-Captain N version of Castlevania.

I wonder if a Power Hour kind of show could work today with current vidya franchises.

If the toon makers Sailor Moon ever got released would they're be like Porn and Fetish artwork of it like what has happened with the actual Sailor Moon over the years, as I've imagined a while ago an image like this one of Serena/Usagi in the bathroom but with the Toon Makers version of Serena/Usagi (even though she was live-action in the Toon Maker's version and was also named Victoria) while reading an astronomy book?

Heck, sometimes she won't even bother changing the names, like in her Parallel Sailor Moon one-shot where the Sailors are all moms who literally named their daughters after themselves (at least Usagi tried to be clever and named her second girl Kousagi).

Usagi's parents are straight up named after Naoko's real parents, and while it's mainly an anime thing even in the manga her dad barely appears and it's just her mom after a while.
Even then, there's no mention of them surviving the next 1,000 years like the Senshi do, so she probably just lets them die. Chibiusa doesn't seem to recognize them so they're probably dead.

No, it's like a bad troma movie. Toxie 3 ain't very good compared to the first 2, but it has a charm. 4 is just bad bad. It filming is wrong, the jokes are bad, it'd take me a while to collect my thoughts and list the ways and I'd have to watch it again to get a clearer picture, but I just remember being disappointed. One joke I do remember that they got wrong and then got right, by accident I'm sure, is the one about the other heroes. Ron Jeremy induces these other lame heroes, but instead pretending they're awesome, he just points out they're lame, which isn't funny. Then they die, which is also not funny. Then they somehow get the joke right when they show Toxie learning about them dieing and he's actually upset, which is funny.
I like troma, but this one just doesn't work for me.

This pilot was total absolute fucking ass, it did NOT capture the badass style the game went for in any way.
The Bubsy pilot was unironically better, because even though it was a very by the numbers mediocre "wacky animal guy with attitude does things" cartoon from the 90s, that's at least exactly like the games and every bit as uninspired as them.

There was no "fear of anime" we just didn't think it was cool, and a Westernized Sailor Moon unironically would have done better pre-Toonami airing

Japan through the 80s and literally until the late 90s was seen as a weird place who made shoddy cheap products to jew the American man. There was growing weabooism, but anime fandom was only for outcast adults in trenchcoats and most of it was rooted around martial arts romanticizaion via ninja movies, The Karate Kid, etc, martial arts was more popular than anime as a positive "Japanese thing"

Anime aesthetics were just seen as cheaply animated to the Western eye, used to fluid animation like Disney. Now a bunch of Japs/Weeaboos who obviously are the ones posting ITT asking about the 90s, are gonna tell me I'm wrong despite them being born 1995 at the earliest, but that's how it fucking was, anime wasn't popular to kids before Pokemon

To add on this, before somebody inevitably brings up the Pokemon South Park episode, Pokemon was unique because it WAS that big of a phenomenon when it first came out, it spanned so much shit between media and merch that it literally was everywhere and for about two years, EVERY kid was into it

Combine that with the fact that Pokemon was under attack like most things in general because of lingering Satanic Panic, it is what it is. South Park twisted it to be about Americans being afraid of Japanese brainwashing kids but that was....a joke, in a comedy cartoon poking fun at a big trend and the fact that it was controversial though not for those reasons. Everything from Pokemon to Harry Potter was under fire for "satanism" or "witchcraft" or "demon summoning" since the days of G1 mlp, troll dolls, and dungeons and dragons, this was not new or unique to Pokemon

If we're sticking to just the shows that premiered after Goof Troop BUT before the 2000s, we had Gargoyles as a top contender. Wilde could have had the benefit of being Disney's first space themed show, there's little to no grounded rules those type have to follow, in addition of being a completely original IP, so even if i turned out by, they wouldn't have to acknowledge it at all, kind of like they do now with The Shnookums & Meat.

You see it all the time, people call bullshit but I have no idea what people are calling 90s anime then....Naruto? Shit I didn't watch because it came out in like 2005 in the US? Idk

But yeah, there was lots of worsely animated US shit, Hannah Barbera being the main perpertrators, from the like 60s-70s, but I think people just accepted that shit was bootleg Disney/Warner anyway, like nobody was passionate about Huckleberry Hound

>if it was animated in japan it's anime
No, Transformers was entirely created by Hasbro even if Sunbow animated it. It's more popular in the US and UK than in Japan for that very reason, it was closer to superheroes and G.I. Joe than any anime

As for Voltron and Robotech, mild blips compared to the likes of Transformers, TMNT, MOTU, etc in terms of nostalgia. It existed, it wasn't a huge phenomenon, a few animes like those and Speed Racer had MILD popularity through the decades before Pokemon/Toonami, yes

Tad Stones.
>"The original concept for "Warp Wilde" followed a military man in the future who got demoted to become the guardian of the kids of extraterrestrial ambassadors. The kids then joined him as he continued to investigate the galactic Gandi trying to bring down the Intergalactic Federation, and got in the way as only kids are able to do."
>"Due to company politics at the time, the pilot was re-written without Stones and re-developed and pitched as a show after a futuristic family. That pitch was ultimately not picked up because of its similarities to The Jetsons. Stones had plans to work on the pitch again and revert it back to his original idea, but instead was assigned to develop the animated series spin-off of Aladdin."

Anon, not only is it a well known pitch trailer that's been online since 1998(before a lot of posters were born), someone was able to find the entire pilot at the Library of congress and posted it online a few years ago. There's even a cycle from the pitch that made it into the Sailor Moon toyline in America because they had the tooling made up.
>This has a "watchmen kids show" vibe to it.
because this is the type of show it's parodying. The whole idea of the Watchmen parody is how the TMNT cartoon was based off a comic that, while not super gory as more violent comics, has the turtles kill Shredder in issue one. The SATAM Watchmen was what if someone took a mature reader's comic like Watchmen and made it for kids.

Well, I was born, but I wasn't on the internet, so I see how I missed it. Honestly, though, It just seems silly. They actually DID make SATAM cartoons of Rambo and Robocop, so I guess my point is they made dumbed down bullshit for kids out of whatever they could get the rights to, regardless of its original intent. See also: Samurai Pizza Cats, where they literally just rewrote the whole script. Still hyped for the new video game that's getting, btw.

I like her because she's flawed,
That said it was a massive narrative commitment only 1 season/ 14 chapters in to basically have the the main couple be committed not just a kid, but to be together for the next thousand years. It basically makes it impossible to even attempt other love interests or drama, because this kind of show isn't going to permanently erase a little girl's existence.

Pretty good assessment, but I'd add
>Mercury
briefly attempts to try being a lesbian, fails at it, loves dick way too much. Could probably be fuckbuddies with Jupiter, but they both want men too much for it to be more than something to work out frustrations. Very professional and put together, none of the bedroom ever leaves your privacy and no one would ever know what she's into. Not very vocal, but has a sweet soft voice and moan.
>Venus
comically so. no sense of rythm, ironically, makes strange noises that border on intentionally exaggerated and real, awful at dirty talk. cute at first but she insists she's a love goddess and full of herself, and will not accept critique. Most of her conception of sex seems to come from movies, often porn
>Moon
incredibly clingy too. Will give up putting much effort quickly. Also terrible hygiene that she takes for granted because her transformation beautifies her and removes flaws. She's a screamer, and not a pleasant or erotic one.
>Mars
Will make judgemental critiques. she criticizes you in front of her friends. Would actually work out as a lesbian since she sort of despises men in general, but she doesn't care about sex all that much and finds masturbation to herself or vague androgynous concepts of a lover more. She finds herself attractive enough to masturbate in front of a mirror, but also hated herself for it.

>Jupiter
Very flexible with tastes, really kinky stuff will make her feel dirty, she deals with it even if it means bottling some feelings. Would prefer sweet, gentle lovemaking, but if taught about it she would find she loves it rough, not that she'd ask for it and would be embarrassed. She'll give, but she REALLY loves receiving. And tries, if not masters, dirty talk, she's more flirty and cute than actually vulgar. She'll date a submissive man or soft woman , but in her heart of hearts she's turned off by it and would rather have a dominant man/woman. Attempted lesbianism but didn't last long, and her few pursuits ended up being like Uranus.
>Saturn
about spot on, and can't handle too much without complaining weakly about it. Not that she'd actually stop, she's too submissive to. Might develop some kinky interests but nothing she wants to actually do herself.
>Uranus
Will fuck men but it's more like a competition for her, very rough, where she's daring a man to break her in and try to convert her, and will hate herself in the morning. She wouldn't ever actually submit because her enjoyment comes more from the anger and violence than pleasure. Prefers girls because she likes to dominate herself, especially submissive and inexperienced ones. Into degradation, on both ends.
>Neptune
To many's surprise, while she prefers women, she wouldn't object to a man even if she doesn't care much for them sexually. She will even look at the positives, but politely turn down any future hook-ups. Similar to Mercury in being very professional about her sex life.

>We literally have interviews of cartoon creators that said they were no longer needed because of pokemon since the networks realized that it's cheaper to import anime than to make new cartoons.
which was kinda dumb, because the only networks where this was really a thing was Fox Kids, where Saban took over and filled the last few years with anime(and then 4kids), and Toonami on Cartoon Network
Nick never touched anime for the most part past the 80s, except Dragon Ball Z kai on nicktoons, and that was much later. They decided to make their own in Avatar instead of licensing anything
Disney/ABC avoided it except for Disney XD much later
Kids WB was infamous for Pokemon and YugiOh, but besides Card Captor Sakura they didn't really do anything else long term. That's where Tom Ruegger would've been referring to, but they were still buying American cartoons, just not his stuff.
Toonami basically stopped getting western action shows for the most part, and Turner stopped trying stuff like Swat Kats and Jonny Quest. But Cartoon Network was still doing cartoons

>Anime aesthetics were just seen as cheaply animated to the Western eye, used to fluid animation like Disney.
If that was true than no one would watch any tv series since all of them are inferior to disney stuff but we all know that's bullshit.

Yeah.
But to be fair, the guy wearing a Sailor Moon backpack to 8th grade at a private, rich-kid, all boys preparatory academy with a reputation for its emphasis on ruthless machismo (seriously, like half of my former classmates could now be characters in some Bret Easton Ellis novel, with the irony being that Bret is actually an enormous homo) would have known to expect the teasing and he did it, anyway. That's elder god levels of "I don't give a fuck, i'mma do me" confidence. Always a little jealous of that, honestly.
Kids from there were called CHAssholes by other schools in our conference.
Then I went to Quaker school and everyone's extreme softness in comparison was a culture shock at first.

The UPN Blues Brothers got pretty far into production before being cancelled; there's some dispute over how much of it was actually finished but there was at least enough done that at least portions of various episodes were previewed at trade shows.

The Young Astronauts was a mid-season replacement series for CBS about a group of kids that gets stranded in space. The pilot aired on January 25th, 1986 with the second scheduled to air on February 1st. On January 28th, the Challenger broke up seventy-three seconds in its flight. The show and a tie-in comic were cancelled with the remaining episodes never airing and even the pilot is lost media. Oddly enough, you can find reels of some of the dialogue recording sessions on Youtube since those were sold on eBay but almost no artwork from the show still remains.

In the category of stuff that never finished its original run but did eventually come out. Bounty Hamster was cancelled after a lengthy mid-season hiatus and seven out of the twenty-six episodes never actually aired on television.

I can't find the conversation, sadly so I can't recall the exact points they made about their wives but the tranny guy's wife is universally despised because she's a fucking cunt in every way. Like she, a white bitch, accused me of cultural appropriation way back in the day when we were roommates and before she married the tranny. Her reason? I cook with chopsticks. I told her it's cultural appropriASIAN and it's okay since I'm Asian, anyway so she called me a liar. Then I showed her a picture of me, my gook-ass dad and uncle and my very, very Asian gramma and she shut the fuck up about it.
She pulls shit like this all the time not to mention that she's just generally unpleasant to be around. Even her tranny husband acknowledges that most people find her awful and that he's lost several friends over marrying her. No, coming out as trans didn't affect his social circles much. Marrying that cunt did.

>>Anime aesthetics were just seen as cheaply animated to the Western eye, used to fluid animation like Disney.
>If that was true than no one would watch any tv series since all of them are inferior to disney stuff but we all know that's bullshit.
It is true on some level, 90s anime was still janky and a lot of it that aired like DBZ was from the 80s

Regardless it doesn't matter if Western shows had plenty of jank too, it's about what people thought not what was true. The USA was still very racist and xenophobic.....yes, media tried to change that, yes a lot of 90s celebrities like Kurt GoBang and that whole "alternative" scene were basically proto SJWs, but they didn't reflect the common American citizen or child, we were busy calling everyone n words or faggots and playing Twisted Metal to give a shit about what some blue haired Lesbian was saying on MTV

I personally was someone who got into anime via Sailor Moon PRE Toonami, of course I was a typical 90s boy and would never admit liking such a show, Pokemon was really what broke doors down, after that average kids had no problem liking DBZ and shit, and anecdotally I got super into edgey OVA crap because my parents didn't care about ratings and bought me anything I asked for and I just never said anything about what was actually on those tapes, but I was a young pre teen-teen by then in the 00s, this is post anime acceptance

Oh it's worse than that anon. The Japanese in general don't see cheating as taboo as it is in most places. It's not like they're swingers or anything, and it's not happening in most relationships, but when cheating does happen it's not considered as big a deal. Even in long term relationships. It's almost like an expectation.
If a woman(or man for that matter) feels like they're not entirely satisfied, they'll just cheat if they can with little guilt. It may break a relationship, but it's not as much of a finite end for one as it is elsewhere.
you know why NTR is so popular over there? because it's a fact of life.

Transformers comes to mind, whenever it's solely Americans working on it they always overly humanize the designs

>Why is it whenever Americans try their hand at doing their own thing with Japanese IPs the designs are always markedly worse,
Americans in general are less skilled at the arts than most other countries and there are certain things that American culture overemphasizes (humanization, "realism") that always stand counter to creative designs.

this is true. Even some of the better stuff westerners do aren't toyetic. I generally like Milne but Milne's designs are barely Transformers instead of "spiky bishounen robot men." And don't get me started on Bay, ugh

IIRC Saban/Hasbro doesn't want to pay licensing to Toei for suits and footage use anymore so they're trying to do their own independent things and a lot of them look bad

G1 wouldn't have been what it was if it didn't have Gundam alumni working on it redesigning the characters for the show, cause if you go back to the old G1 comics that predate the show they literally just used the toy designs as is and a lot of them look bad

Naoko Takeuchi was very pretty back in the day. Especially in comparison to other female mangaka who look rather stinky.

At least Garret (the one in the wheelchair) wasn't some "special guy". He was rude, kind of crude, always the first to fire if he could, no one put up with his shit, and he got rightfully dunked on from time to time. Was funny to see him being forced to separate from the team when stairs came into play.

but he was also cool! it made sense for him to be that way because he was overcompensating, and he was still a cool guy. Really great character.

Oh for sure, and his greatest fear made sense for such an extroverted guy, claustrophobia.
