It's probably the only Supergirl story a casual fan could actually name. She doesn't really have any other iconic stories, or even any iconic moments that aren't appearances in other books.
There's a reason her personality constantly changes from writer to writer and adaptation to adaptation. Notice how her CW show mostly adapted stuff from SuperMAN books.

The only solo Supergirl stories I like are from the Peter David run, but because those were from the period where Kara Zor-El wasn't allowed to exist because of the "Superman is the only Kryptonian" edict, it's about the human teenager Linda Danvers merged with the Matrix Supergirl. And DC is clearly embarrassed about that period and never acknowledges it ever.

The absolute state of /co when even two of you plebs make this thread or reply with this stupidity. Even casual DC fans would reference her death in COIE, fucking CBS and the DCW used a fake tribute cover of it as a promotional image:

Even though the TV show used many of the Superman villains (like Livewire or, and to a lesser extent Metallo), it also used Superman villains who are also associated with Supergirl, like Banshee. Even on The CW, far more fucking casual watched a low rated episode of that TV show, and certainly far more watched and know any of her animated appearances (which include Supergirl with the Legion, Supergirl taken by Darkseid - which even got fucking toys made of it- Supergirl being cloned) all of which would have been seen by hundreds of thousands more people than would even know that King is the hack that he is.
