Farquaad was created for the movie. He isn't in the book.

Fiona was also created for the movie. There is a princess at the very end of the book, but she doesn't have a name and looks nothing like Fiona

Shrek is simply a retelling of "Beauty and the Beast", except that instead of the Beast turning into a Prince at the end, Belle turns into another Beast.

Which honestly would've been the better ending.

The book is almost completely different.
Shrek doesn't even use his firebreath.

Even before Shrek premiered in 2001, everyone knew that it was going to be aimed at older audiences. DreamWorks made it perfectly clear with their CG debut in 1998 that they wanted the teenagers/adults demographic

Well I mean she is a monsterwoman, which is what Fiona was.
Even in some deleted scenes from older scripts we are shown that Fiona was an ugly monster before, and she only became beautiful from a witch's potion (in the storyboards Fiona had choice between "beauty potion" and "happilyeverafter potion" and fiona chooses beauty believing she can make her own happily ever after)

PDI did a great job with the computer animation of Antz, Shrek, Shrek 2 and Madagascar. It's pretty obvious that Shark Tale wasn't made by them

4 might be better than 3, but you can't deny that 3 has more story progression

The book can be read in like five minutes. It's not sacrosanct and they definitely needed to add stuff.
