The Sony movie actually got a lot of things "right" about Venom, but went about them in totally weird ways that make it seem wrong

Like, the whole "verbose ass ranting about how he's going to torture you but is kind of hard to take seriously until you realize he can and will do those things because he's nuts" is pretty 90s Venom

But they gave that whole persona to the Venom symbiote, instead of it being Eddie Brock's persona as Venom, and turned Eddie into just basically a reluctant hero/everyman who's sick of the symbiote's shit for comedic value
