TL;DR: John Byrne has stated that there will be massive news coming this Thursday regarding his X-Men fancomic X-Men: Elsewhen (which he had previously teased about last October). Thursday happens to be the same day that Marvel will have a dedicated X-Men panel at SDCC, and the rumored announcement will be that he and Cebulski have worked out a deal so that Elsewhen is going to be officially published by Marvel.

The context is entirely as the first few panels explained: Teen Lana accidentally gets sent to the future and finds out that she'll never end up with Clark, so she asks for a kiss before she gets returned to the present with her memories of the event erased. It's really more bittersweet than anything, but of course internet puritans who have never read the story saw that single page and blew it out of proportion.

There's plenty of other shit to lambast Byrne over, but that scene isn't one of them.
