Jon is definitely not my first idea when it comes to hunks let alone something bara adjacent. At best he's a twunk depending on who illustrates him. Nevertheless, when a character comes out. I see a change in their appearance afterwards. Especially with Tim Drake or Jon Kent. It's weird, like they hit them with a yassification beam or something.

Exactly, I hate that so much. Is it some sort of inherent bias the artist or editorial teams have? They don't need to make these characters look so glammed up like that. Just make them cool and attractive, instead they make these characters look like they came out of Q-Force.

Even they are extremely few and far between compared to the latter. Nevertheless, I just want some variety when it comes to characters that happen to be gay, bisexual. It's just ridiculous that these creatives tend to fallback on these tropes more or less.

that one artist never tires of ruining looks, but with billy, who still often gets fairly conventional art, the problem is deeper. sometime after Gillen, when he was still written more or less as he had been previously even if he looked too metro, he got saddled with one or two writers who decided he was actually a massive faggot who couldn't say a word without five prada bags falling out of his mouth. it's pretty offensive to take a character who was not femme before and suddenly make them femme, and, no, 'some gays are just like that' is not an excuse, because this one WASN'T.

Took the words right out of my mouth. What irritates me about Billy in particular with this discourse is that I see some takes insinuating Billy's femme display is character development. Or a logical next step for his personality which leaves me completely dumbfounded. I never get why people insist upon it so much. Thinking that every gay characters needs to look and act like they stepped out of L.A.

That also reminds me how drastically Iceman's personality shifted after being outed by Jean Grey. Before he used to be a lighthearted class clown. Carefree, often joking about. But once his solo by Sina Grace debuted, he pretty much became the authors self insert. Acting like he came out of Will & Grace. Campy, femme, slutty. His jokes awkwardly inserting gay lingo. And that's what he's been ever since thanks to other writers like Anthony Oliveira. It just doesn't make sense why he couldn't be as he was but also gay? Or at best bisexual?

The fucking Iceman situation is so stupid. His personality didn't need to change at all; gay and gay-adjacent people had already been reading him as a homo for decades, so clearly he fit the mold. (Let's not forget that weird moment when Chuck Austen a decade earlier wrote what would have been a much more natural and satisfying coming out arc for him and just had it end with 'welp, i guess he couldn't be gay since northstar says so and that's totally not the plot of a billion gay romances.') And bi would have been the better, more logical move, but Bendis had to take him completely off the table because he committed the capital crime of being seen getting too friendly with Bendis's waifu Kitty.

In retrospect that definitely would've been more interesting in my opinion if Northstar and Iceman did get together. Instead of having Jean-Paul getting married off to Kyle. Whom hasn't really been a compelling love interest. From what I remember he just hung around and really couldn't do anything of note beyond getting caught up in conflict and being used a prince in a pinch.
>And bi would have been the better, more logical move
Honestly but I always hear plenty say otherwise. Talking about how in real life there are strictly gay men who lived a lie trying to convince themselves. Thanks to societal influences surrounding them, but I digress.
>but Bendis had to take him completely off the table because he committed the capital crime of being seen getting too friendly with Bendis's waifu Kitty.
Jokes on Bendis now that Kitty has been out as bisexual since 2020. As of now currently in some sort of casual relationship with another woman.

To be fair to Oliveira, that might just be maintaining the newer voice Marvel seems to have decided he has to have now; it seems pretty consistent across the books. He's written Bill & Ted before, and they read fairly normally, in contrast to when, say, Howard gets them.

Civilian love interests are always worse than fellow capes unless it's very specific situations like Superman or Spider-man, where the civilian is integral to the experience of the hero character and has enough of a presence on the page to justify their existence. If there are a multitude of queer characters floating around, afterthought love interests need to get booted in favor of couples that can punch bad guys together.
And also the love interest shouldn't be annoying and boring like Jon's.

Funny enough in the Secret Six miniseries, Jay has finally been given something to do. Working alongside Jon as a superhero. All the while being caught in a tense bind/potential love triangle between him and Dreamer. Itโ€™s not saying much but definitely more than what Bernardโ€™s been given with Tim. Still find neither character as good love interests in the end though.

Yeah, I can accept that they at least had the sense to give Jon a boyfriend who can actually go on the adventure with him. He had the dual problem of being irritating and kind of a caricature to start with and also interfering with an established fujo ship.
Bernard has different problems: being a civilian and deprived of his more interesting original personality. But Tim was already a multishipped character and Bernard wasn't as annoying, so he got more buy-in from the fujos (still not a ton, but he has a lot more fan content than Jon/Jay).

We all know they could have solved this dilemma in a number of ways and failed to pick any of them.

Thatโ€™s for sure, while it mightโ€™ve been the boldest and controversial choice. I definitely think with the right writers that would be interested in exploring it. Tim Drake and Conner Kent should have gotten together. I know most people love the duo as best friends but I definitely think that a romantic relationship between them is foreseeable. I think their dynamic as a couple would have a well built foundation to work upon. Also itโ€™s a play on the Bat/Super dynamic that most enjoy. Audiences donโ€™t see it as off putting between say Kara and Dick. Yes itโ€™s a hetero couple, I think my stance still applies.

And of course the old 'Kon is super straight' doesn't matter because Tim can just be the exception character. Is Kon getting regularly and meaningfully used? No. Do his straight ship/s particularly matter anymore? No. Was Bernard already gay before? No. So there's no real issue aside from inertia. Zap him with the homolust ray.

Better yet, go for full transgression and zap Jason since that's Tim's biggest ship. And make it a diegetic gay laser so it turns into a plot point.
