This was the one issue I had with the movie. Gunn relied too much on weird close up wide-angle face shots for some strange reason.

It's done for meme purposes. Movie studios now purposefully insert scenes/shots/lines that are meant to become memes because they believe it helps the movie's longevity.

>Nah! We aways save those when we need to kill someone... C'mon guys! We have a line of half-characters jobbers we created exactly for this sort of stuff! It's bad enough that we are wasting Guy into this

Gunn's take on Superheroes is that they're kinda weird. Just watch the Specials , a movie he wrote 25 years ago, and a lot of the stuff in Superman is still present in there. He doesn't think of them as normal people, he adds quirks to them

Are you talking about her making hawk sounds or the camera angle?
I mean I get the camera angle is kinda strange, but hawkgirl making hawk sounds is pretty cool to me.

Also, did they turn another redhead into a black person? Or did they do that stupid thing where they give the black person red hair?

For me it was, maybe below christopher reeves superman, but by far is the best film because it actually feels in tone like a superman movie.
My list is:
1. Christopher reeves superman
2. James gun superman
3. Superman returns superman
4. Man of steel

With the last two is more like a tie, because superman returns was a better as a superman movie in tone, but to be honest, it was kind of boring, didn't like the stuff about supes having a secret child with lois as a surprise.
Man of steel is hated because it popularized gloomy godlike superman, but the story wasn't that bad beside the whole dumb stuff with pa kent, but by far it had the best jor-el and krypton lore.
People like to shit on the destruction of the city in that movie. But I'm sure two kryptonians engaging in a fight would cause a lot of destruction, people blame that fight too, but people like and tend to forget the city destruction was thanks to the terraformation machine zod brought, but could have been nice to see supes saving some civilians more often.
Clark killing zod? I don't know, zod didn't give him to many options either, sounds stupid on paper to let live the guys who almost destroyed your planet.
But the real deal why that movie sucked is because it failed to despict superman in tone.
Superman is a colorful wholesome goody two shoes boyscout to the core.
That scene about "this world don't let you be good" in other movies is way too cynical for the actual superman. I get superman is seen as a godlike being, but the gimmick with him is how he's the nicest average joe or being on earth. Superman is cool, when you don't focus on his powers, but the kind of person he is. Powerscalers are the worst for sure.

I'm still surprised I recently learned Kendra saunders was incredibly in love with Martian manhunter at some point.
They even had a kid in an alternate universe.

I always thought his Gotham was a bit too weird. Doctor Suess type shit. I much prefer the 1940s brownstone aesthetic BTAS brought to the table, which contrasted nicely with STAS's Metropolis also having roots in the 40s, but instead the vision of the era's futurists. It's like a continuation of the Futurama exhibit at the 1939 World Fair.
