>>149499743The Ivan think is super fucked up, I get he is this Lois Lane type trying to uncover the truth and "catch" the protagonist, and those usually always fail and are suppose to be the antagonists. But a couple of thinks makes his situation differently, for once all the crazy stuff that happens with no explanations to the people in town would drive anyone to investigate, second he is one of the few characters who treats all those transformation and disappearances more seriously like many of the readers did even if the story itself ask you to brush aside all that identity death with the Chinese girl and the football players so with him the story feels like it has a little more grounded edge that with the main cast where all of that are just gags.
And to make it worse as more and more normal people get tangled into Anne's magical lives it start becoming this massive gaslighting operation where everyone this guy ever knew start lying and misleading him like an accidental Invasion of the Body snatchers situation. And to add insult to injury he runs into the worst possible person that could have caught him snooping around giving him a terrible curse.
His whole situation becomes this high stakes (for him) intrigue, which makes his situation pretty messed up but also is a good read. I think that tonal whiplash can work well with one set of characters acting like everything is fine and the rest of the cast treating it with more weight.
