Just because it is fiction requiring a certain degree of suspension of disbelief, it doesn't mean a writer can change the already accepted rules whenever they like it.

Putting aside how much of "their" story is a decades long shared universe...

Sure, they can change the rules on the fly. But that's what bad writers do. Why should anyone be invested in a story that goes against its base premise and rules?
