Ultimately while he clearly had family issues he was a wannabe conqueror of china. not even outside the general possibility space for a young dark lord - The cycle of Dynasties gives a pretty understandable weltanschuung for the populace, even if the current world appears to be decently well managed by the various kung fu temples.Then add in him spending decades angrily obsessing over the whole "warrior of black and white" thing, him clearly being smart and charismatic enough to get people to follow him despite being a madman, you've got someone with a grudge against kung fu as a concept.
