Why did the crew hate this guy so much anyway?

I don't know even as a kid I thought he was reasonable to join the goverment to stop the superheroes if they turned bad.

He was just a boring exposition bot most of the time and didn't get a chance to have an actual character until fucking Legacy, the series finale for STAS.

They wanted someone with a tie to Superman that would be able to make a clone of him and Supergirl. At least they showed that Hamilton wasn't evil. Just scared.

He's a geek, not a nerd. He was intimidated by all the references to history, Shakespeare, and world mythology in Gargoyles.

It is kinda weak that one single interaction where Superman was aggressive and intimidating,
was enough to start making violent metahuman clones under the influence of the government.

>Emru Townsend: Do you see any possibilities for other series that would be animated and yet a bit more serious? Serious doesn't have to be more grim, but just... like Batman was--where you can have action/adventure but have to not necessarily talk down. There was Invasion America, but that was kind of iffy. And Gargoyles was pretty good, but that got subverted toward the end.

>Bruce Timm: Yeah, that whole premise of Gargoyles was kind of namby-pamby anyway, with all that Celtic fantasy crap.

That one incident could’ve easily lead to the Earth being taken over. It’s a big deal.
One day of terrorist attacks 24 years ago means I can’t take a water bottle on a plane. It shouldn’t be surprising that arguably the world’s strongest hero being mind controlled would make people jumpy.
Anonymous No.149521448 [Report]

It wasn't just the one interaction, he was hesitant before because of Superman trying to take over the Earth as Darkseid's minion.

He was one of Supermans friends, practically his Alfred. The guy who provided Superman with stuff like Spacesuits and Anti-Kryptonite armor. So him turning on Supes out of fear of him becoming a dictator was a much bigger backstab for the fans than the writers likely intended.

Timm went into detail about his backgroun in his Modern Masters book. He was a pure capeslop guy. He only learned how to draw well because John K took him under his wing and showed him the ropes about proper cartooning.

He did not always, which should be a good motivator. His 80s comic work is unrecognizable. Some of it was good, but nowhere near as stylized as he’d become. The way he draws women was largely inspired by Lynne Naylor( John K’s ex) who fixed his manly looking Poison Ivy design

She wouldn't happen to had worked on Samurai Jack would she? Her style is very similar to a lot of the cartoons of that era.

It was probably out of resentment for Superman even having an 'alfred' character to begin with. Since in the comics he got all his special gadgets from the Fortress Of Solitude and Jor-Els AI.

He learned to draw by tracing superhero comics instead of the proper way. He gave his portfolio samples to Marvel and DC and got rejected by both because he was a terrible artist. Animation was his fallback. You didn't really have to draw well to get a job at Filmation. He got better, but it definitely hurt him in the long run.

Timm was one of these people that constantly 'failed upward' until he hit ceilings he couldn't get past. He's very similar to people who are viewed as mediocre like Brett Ratner, who kept getting work because he could come in reasonably under budget and get something pushed out the door.

Enough people have pointed out for years and often here how the writers underneath the "timmverse" were the true talents, yet stupid plebs and normies will still give Timm all the credit, when he doesn't deserve it.

As for his cred, he was a geek about Batgod, but had no deep dive knowledge about DC as a whole without the help of long-term staff at DC or others. He would have been awful as the show runner for Batman - The Brave and the Bold, for example.

He was the unifying person behind all the shows and his instincts and preferences were typically good. But yeah Caped Crusader is what you get when he doesn't have a great team.

As someone mentioned, they just didn’t like writing for him because his only function was to deliver exposition.

Maybe they should have thought of a way to improve him but they never did, so his scenes were always weak until that one scene at the end, which they then called back to as an excuse to turn him against Superman.

He might have had decent management instincts, but his instincts were shit. He's part of the problem with all the bat prep time and batwank of the past two decades and the way everything has played out - for example, Green Lanterns. EVERYTHING that has happened, from Cyborg on the cinematic Justice League because Cereal Lord was trying to protect Hal and keep John from being the token black on the team, to the failure of the animated series, and everything else related to adapting GL. It's why we're getting True Detective - the GL not-animated-series, instead of a proper sci fi show.
