There are so many animated versions of The Wizard of Oz, and sadly most are very bad.

I dream of one day seeing an animated movie of short series well animated and looking magical and charming.

Until the day comes when the Judy Garland movie totally vanishes from our collective consciousness, that sadly may only ever be a pipe dream.

Funny way of saying no.

The Judy Garland movie going public domain will make a huge difference since people can more freely use those elements that usurped the book. No worries about that "You have to be super careful to not use this specific shade of green bodypaint" legal autism that looms over people doing green Wicked Witches without paying WB.

This is something Charlie and the Chocolate Factory suffers from, too. It's a big reason the Jhonny Depp movie had to go "fuck it" and make it the furthest thing from the classic movie it could.

True.
I wonder if there's a name for this phenomena. The "an adaptation becomes more famous than the source material and all future adaptations of the source material exist in relation to the more famous adaptation" thing.

Look at this garbage. Doesn't quite look like Judy Garland but they designed her to evoque Judy Garland in many ways, including the fact that she looks less like a child and more like an adult playing a child, she's even drawn with clear signs of breast binding, and also the VA sounds so much like Judy Garland that her directions were obviously to imitate her voice.

Tv Tropes calls it "Audience-Coloring Adaptation".

>"Audience-Coloring Adaptation"
Sounds faggy, but makes sense.
Is Conan the Barbarian under that trope?

From the source itself:
>The Conan the Barbarian franchise has been a series of adaptations building on each other, for better or worse, until the original Howard stories were Lost in Imitation. Some aspects of the Expanded Universe Conan, such as the classic Arnold Schwarzenegger film and Frank Frazetta's artwork depictions, are more successful than others, such as the sequel Conan the Destroyer which with Red Sonja (1985) nearly killed the entire genre as well as franchise. And the Conan remake seems to have done it all over again, as it did poorly at the box office and was savaged by critics.

Picrel was pretty good. Actually has characters from the OG books. But, yeah, would love to see a true adaptation of the books like the comic did for the first 5.

The sixth book, Emerald City of Oz, was written as an ending for the series complete with an "Oz was cut off from the outside world entirely so I can't write anymore books since I've been cut off from the source" coda. Problem was Baum had a hard time getting audiences to care about his other fantasy books so after a few years he caved with a "Dorothy really got into ham radio, so I can report on whats going on in Oz again" explanation in front of Book 7.

They are pretty decent. They have some interesting characters like Betsy Bobbin, Trot and Captain Bill getting introduced. As anon above said thou, the sixth book was the original finale, so the comic ended there (said 5 book were adapted earlier but it was 6) and doing all 14 might have dragged the series on too long.
Read 'em if you get the chance.
