Just came across this when reading some old Avengers

Is this Mark Waid and Busiek writing in as fans?

If so, it seems like an interesting find.

By far the most infamous case of this is Geoff Johns, who was a member of HEAT back in the day. I wonder if he was personally responsible for any of the death threats.

Marvel does but rarely print anything that's not gushing with praise...which backfires sometimes like the C.O. America incident

In fairness to Johns, and the entire rest of HEAT, I actually think Emerald Twilight sucks. None of the storytelling decisions in it ever rise above the level of mediocre. In particular it made the abominable decision to kill off the entire Green Lantern Corps, which is one of the most spectacular examples I can think of of a comic book company shooting itself in the foot in terms of potential. Green Lantern as a franchise would probably be much bigger, to this day, if the prime years of the 90s hadn't been spent with the entire Corps nonexistent.

So I don't really blame them for being pissed at the storyline. Doesn't excuse the death threats, of course, but still. And I actually am pretty grateful for Johns and how much work he put in to getting GL back to a semblence of sanity.

That "old Avengers issue" was published in the late 90s as a fake 1960s story, complete with a fake letters page with 'letters' from writers who were at Marvel at the time.

There are some actual Bronze Age Marvel books with letters from Busiek before he got into the industry, but the letters in that issue are just a gag, part of the pretence that it was a real 1963 comic.
