I just rewatched The Muppet Movie for the first time in years, and as I paid attention to Gonzo's scenes, I realized...
>Spends the entire movie talking about the sky
>Highlight sequence is him flying via balloons and "leaving Earth" and wishing he could stay in the air forever
>Has a song where he gazes longingly at the moon and stars and sings about going back "there" some day
...Yeah, no shit they made him an alien in Muppets From Space. Honestly, it would've been weirded if they DIDN'T. It almost feels like that was always the intent but they never wanted to commit.

Gonzo is the ultimate "I wanna ride, your rollercoaster baby baby, I wanna ride" Muppet of all time. Like the Vizio of Walmart. Best fella. Archaic retardation need not apply.

They literally said when Muppets From Space came out that it was directly inspired by the "I'm Going To Go Back There Someday" song.

That makes sense. But I'm referring more to the fans who didn't like the fact that Muppets From Space revealed that he was an alien. After rewatching The Muppet Movie, how could you think he was anything BUT? Especially since none of the other Muppets could ever figure out what he was.

Because there's so many weird and random Muppet monsters and creatures out there that a curved nosed whatever doesn't necessarily need to be an alien. The Gonzo puppet was created for a Christmas special as part of a menagerie of holiday stealing critters called Frackles that are still used to this day under that name even after Gonzo split from the group proper.

Grew up watching Muppet Babies. He was always unofficially an alien.

The original ending of Muppets from Space was that the aliens were never Gonzo's family but a bunch of shapeshifters that saw a bunch of old Muppet Show broadcasts and decided to LARP as Gonzos because they decided he was the ultimate being. So while Gonzo's identity still remains being a mysterious Whatever/Weirdo, he doesn't really care anymore because of the "Learn to appreciate your found family" message.

Huh, that would've been interesting. I wonder why they decided to scrap that in favor for actual Gonzo aliens.

Jesus. Has there EVER been an instance where executive meddling actually IMPROVED a movie? It's always "the movie was good until the execs told them to change something and then it wasn't good anymore."

>What is Animal? What are the Fraggles? What is Sweetums? What is Oscar?
The Fraggles are Fraggles. Sweetums is a monster. Oscar is a grouch (which seem similar to monsters but are a different race because... they don't have noses, I guess?). Animal might also be a monster possibly maybe? But to address your point, yeah, sure, lots of Muppets are weird, made-up creatures. But Gonzo is the only one they've ever made a point of going "We don't know what you are. Your species is unidentifiable." And in a world of monsters, grouches, Fraggles, Doozers, Gorgs, Honkers, Dingers, vampires, Snuffleupagus...es, Muppet animals, Muppet people, and all the weird, unidentifiable critters and creatures on the Muppet Show, for Gonzo to be the ONE "weird" one... Well, that implies he's a special case, whether you like it or not.

>I thought he was a bird.
There is that moment in The Muppet Movie when Kermit is talking to himself.
>...And a thing. Whatever Gonzo is. He looks a little bit like a turkey.
>A little bit. But not much.

plenty of times, you only hear about it when they when they push the bad ideas. But a lot of movies are actually improved by executive meddeling, because somebody has to keep the director in line and push ideas that sell. For example the OG ending of Alien, Shazam with barry's mom, The Shawshank Redemption ending and the ending of Dodgeball

It's also how we got Wreck it Ralph staying fresh instead of yet another movie talking about old ass arcade games in an era where retro bullshit is played out and everyone's sick of it.

ngl itโ€™s really a shame the general muppet space dismissed it as a lesser; itโ€™s a pretty fine movie about found family and whatnot

so what if they arenโ€™t singing in it?

Also essentially the first Star Wars, which was originally a piece of shit until the studio and its' staff saved the movie through re-shoots and editing.

It is so bizarre that Camilla is nowhere to be seen in Muppets From Space. She should've been one of the main characters in the movie, just as involved in the plot as Rizzo is.

Dave Goelz has said the way he always thought of it was that there is no Camilla. It's always a different random chicken Gonzo is calling Camilla. I think the only time they explicitly used that idea in a production was the 30th anniversary special where they do a joke where Gonzo can't tell which chicken is Camilla since "all chickens look alike to [him]."

>>149529575
I mean to be fair singing and songs have always been apart of muppet DNA, that said the movie is great despite that.

I just feel bad for modern day muppets because Disney treats the muppets with contempt.

Oh, I don't think I like that. Like it's kinda funny, but it basically makes Camilla pointless as a character, and it also paints a sort of... uncaring, I guess?... picture of Gonzo that doesn't really fit him. Besides, it's always kinda been nice to think that while Kermit and Piggy have been dealing with their on-again-off-again chaos, Gonzo and Camilla have been enjoying a nice, stable relationship for almost fifty years.
