In the first and second season the world building was wonderful. Gems had their own culture and a neoclassical aesthetic and the magical element to them was still present and thriving, but as the series grew both of these got phased out and replaced with Sci-fi, which would have been fine, but the way they handled it was sloppy as shit. Especially the absolute eyesore homeworld turned out to be.

I started looking at all the fanfic and fanart the show had before season 4 and it didn't dawn on me until then that all of this is better than what the show turned out to be. The people in charge of SU simply did not give a shit about anything that didn't involve those boring ass townies.

Cultures don't stay stagnant for 6000 years, plus Gem culture had a pretty significant shock occur to it.

In-lore, the war and Pink Diamond's subsequent absence threw their society out of order. Leadership breakdown resulting in aimless and unmanaged "progress" with no clear goals.
In reality, Sugar was not a strong enough personality to effectively run a show and manage art direction.

Steven Universe unironically needed more aliens. All we got were the gems and... Beach City. That's it. Even the situation on Earth was ignored so we have no idea just what the fuck was going on outside of Steven's autistic adventures. The Gems were a star empire that devoured worlds to replenish their numbers, yet... All we see is Steven's autism. Even Homeworld is a joke.

>there's no secret super powerful diamond child hidden away on a distant planet who is responsible for the "no fucking humans" rule
>his name isn't Blood Diamond and he isn't the complete opposite of Steven
Lame show
