Would Steven Universe improve significantly if Gems were guys and not coomerbaits for gooners with specific fetishes?

If they were male it would have been even more gay.

One of the few saving graces of the show was the gems being vaguely female.

People only watched for decently hot girls. If they were male the show would've been canned on season 1

There's potential in a SciFi cartoon where the concept of the gems and Steven himself are retooled into more masculine characters. But it stops being Steven Universe and turns into something else, and the biggest flaw of them all: Steven never being allowed to grow up save for a shitty series finale, is still there. To fix Steven Universe, he needs to stop being an autistic 11-year-old and grow up into a mature adult... The series reflects this with Connie being mildly implied in being somewhat interested in Kevin during his debut episode.

Until the finale, Steven had a Pinnochio complex about him and it was reflected in everyone from Ronaldo to Peedee steadily leaving him behind as they took up jobs and adopted adult interests while Steven remained the same. Any reboot for Steven Universe has choose between two options:
>Let Steven grow up.
>Steven never grows up.
There's potential for both with Jetboy and Pluto showcasing how the latter can be done right. But the former is much more needed in todays society where boys are clearly not being taught those important lessons.

>Steven is dancing in the garden of childhood with Connie but then...
>Steven Universe grows up.
>Steven has to go to school and make actual friends.
>He faces bullies, teachers with a bone to pick, people that are saints and assholes and everything in between.
>Steven has to face, and I mean truly face, the fact that his home life isn't the best and that Greg has flaws.
>Steven has to accept his flaws and that he's never going to be the best at everything.
>Tension grows with Connie as their interests diverge, her implied interest in Kevin and a normal life driving an irreparable wedge between the two... Which is, sort of, exactly what happens in canon.
>Steven has to learn to let go of his friend as childhood comes to an end.
>The Gems are few and not liked.
>Many species want justice.
>Many want revenge.
>The bloodstain of the kindergartens remains.
>There will be times of peace.
>There will be times of peril.
>Go forth Steven as the sun sets on childhood and rises on a new adventure.
Shit writes itself.

It also sounds really generic and like you'll end up with Pretty Pretty Please I Don't Want To Be A Magical Girl if you go that route.

>ugly monstrosities designed by a jewish woman as a deliberate affront to femininity and beauty are "coomerbaits for gooners with specific fetishes"
>somehow they would be improved by making them all gay men
