What happened to the New Gods? When did they become so lame and irrelevant? Outside of Darkseid, none of the New Gods really have anything going on. There is maybe Big Barda but she is stuck in an irrelevant book.

You need a sense of wonder, theatre and a little bit of tech-craziness to make them pop.
Any writer at DC will eventually lose the first two.

Also everything ends up being a Darkseid story. Darkseid is a living god in the biological sense but not a cosmic entity. He needs technology, armies and knowledge to make things happen.

He just represents All-Consuming Fascism as a character but not within the fictional world. Though as Absolute DC shows. It looks really stupid to follow that path.

Where the writers have the characters try and fight the incarnation of fascism by getting more fascist energy then he has.

The New Gods were never relevant. Kirby superfans, people who really like making comics, really like them and that's why DC's been pushing them throughout the decades. Normies never much of them.
You can see the juxtaposition in attitudes in the first letters page to the Forever People. Harlan Ellison digging it and saying it's brilliant so of course it's going to cancelled very soon (and he was right) and then future Meat and Potatoes writer Martin Pasko saying it sucks.
