Why did their ratings always trail behind Nickelodeon and Disney Channel? Even the highest rated Adventure Time episode still did worse did than an average Spongebob rerun (3.5 million vs 4 million)

They were the weird "arthouse" channel with the cartoons that had a more acquired taste. Combine that with the fact that both Nick and Disney had live action to cast a wider net (all boats rise on a network even if its only slightly) and you get CN being the perennial third place.
