To be completely fair, I'm 100% certain the reason things are fluffy and safe is because Dan's automatically trying to future proof his world building so something he writes in the future isn't hit with an unintended consequence that he doesn't want, and also so it's a type of perfect escapist fantasy for himself. I think he fully intends to make stuff happen eventually, he's just gotten to a point where he somehow can't get to the point where things actually do happen.

He did used to, I remember him explicitly mentioning that when he used to update the main comic five days a week. As you said I think it's really the NP, Sketchbook, and Patreon stuff messing it up. Maybe I'll feel differently after I finally read EGS: NP but its always irked me that he does that regularly. Like, if he maintained his regular updates and the main story was still chugging along it would be whatever but everything's slowed to a glacial pace so he can take on side projects. Dan is running an arc in NP where Tedd is Cinderella and Elliot is the Prince right now.

In a story construction matter, EGS is amazingly middle of the road. It's surrounded by all sorts of magic, all sorts of cool things, all sorts of interpersonal relationships. And it sails to be precisely avoiding all of that. ALL of it.
No authentic uryom outfits out of Urusei Yatsura. No Sailor Moon. No Ranma 1/2 gags. No Ellen being 'indiscreet' with Elliot, knowing what he wants sexually. Absolutely nothing about Grace and Ted consummating anything. I've read consomme' soup wisecracks that are spicier than EGS, while at the same time, EGS is the whole damn spice factory.
Dan needs to beaten with an issue of Hustler until he gets his act together and commits to something.
I don't think that Playboy mags exist in the EGS universe.

EGS is so sexless, despite being chock full'o teens, that several characters are not born though normal human sexual activities. Ellen, the magical clone. Grace the test tube hybrid. We don't know anything about Pandora, but she was probably popped out of a magic circle- and without the lesbian OR baby part of lesbian magic denial babies. Lavender and Sirlek were probably hatched out of an egg or something. At least the griffons had to have sex to fertilize eggs.

Looking at some of the posts this post linked to brought me to this image. And looking at it, all I could think was, "This isn't that strange. Naturally born, biological girls do this shit." A girl I know was showing me a pic on her phone and taking a look at the album, she had a bunch of selfies. Tedd ditches the Glasses and Susan becomes blonde, which makes them harder to distinguish from the rest. I think that was another reason why I stop reading the comic after a while I had to pay too much attention on who was who specially because in this comic character tend to change outfits semi regularly and the black and white keeps everyone with the same hair color.

In the Wotch thread someone was complaining about characters dressing like Alvin and the chipmunks like a guy name Evan having a big letter E on his shirt or everyone having a logo in their outfits and rarely changing clothes. But you knwo what? that helps you keep clear who is who.

The problem is Dan is autistic and now in his 40s and online culture has changed so much from when EGS first started. One of the things I notice in reading these old comics is that they're way, WAY different in tone than modern EGS. There's jokes, there's more of a snarkier edge, it just kind of embraces what it is which is a weird, kind of shitty but earnestly created slice of life fetish comic with digressions for anime action scenes. Dan doesn't need to justify any of this stuff in the comic, he just puts it out there and hopes the readers will go with it.

But now the environment is different and Dan is older. There's no more sexualization of anything aside from, I assume, his Patreon art. Everything needs to be explained in detail. And I think part of that is both a result of getting older and also because he's worried he'd be castigated for just going "yeah, I like guys turning into girls and anthros and shit" because there has to be more meaning to it and just embracing it as light and pointless fetish shit is harmful to real trans people or some shit. But I also wonder if at some point he just got bored and wanted to make it more dramatic and thus all the humor and energy from the early days is gone to be replaced by much more serious stuff. It's like an autistic, fluffy Funky Winkberbean.

I mean, the girl in my anecdote had been a girl since she was born, but still enjoying how cute she looked and basically doing the same thing, just capturing it on camera.
