There are literally books dedicated to explaining the benefits of advanced paneling, but idiots want to go for the easiest lowest hanging fruit while convincing themselves it's better that way. 3x3 grid is extremely boring, it's a deliberate rejection of any and all panelling techniques. Literally any 3x3 page is improved by the use of normal panelling, it adds nothing and removes everything. It's like using a 1 string guitar, you gain nothing by handicapping yourself with this lazy shit

There's nothing wrong with the 3x3. It's only a problem if it's done slavishly, instead of letting moments having other panel structures. But there's lots of good reasons to also include 3x3 pages.
I'll post some cool non-3x3s, but I'm still not saying that they shouldn't do 3x3s.

I thought only I had an issue with this
It feels so archaic and cramp to still use, you don't have to be experimental panels either

This is because it is used in a cargo cult way by Eisner-bait writers aping Watchmen.

I draw a webcomic and stuck pretty religiously to a 2x3 format. Lately I've really enjoyed using 3x3 for the sake of how much info can be crammed into a page- though it can easily look far more cramped than a 2x3 if I'm not careful. The most kino option is some mix between 1x3, 2x3 and 3x3, like picrel
