When would you say his comic(s) went wrong?

He's a character carried by visual appeal and Todd himself admitted he failed as a creator because of that
Spawn is one of those books where you're better off reading a random issue than marathon through

1992 when Todd McFarlane thought he could write his own stories.

so let me get this straight
Todd can't write
could only draw Spider-man
and makes the shittiest toys ever
why do people still like that hack?

Issue 1. Spawn was fucked from the start. Todd is a shit writer. He didn't even have any real mythology for spawn till Gayman came along. Everyone else wrote his book for him.

These are correct but also effectively ending the series twice, first in issue 100 when he kills Malebolgia then again 50 issues later for the Armageddon arc.

Issue #1. There was never a plan, and now it's not even recognizable from what it was. Spawn should have been a maxiseries, but it was making too much money to stop.
That way the original set of powers and limitations would actually have meaning and create tension throughout. Spawn having a finite amount of power, before running out, was a great idea, and it had to be ditched because there was never a plan for it.
It could have been The Crow: Capeshit Edition, and it would have been a super cool 90s story, that we all had fond memories of.
Because Spawn was always just Todd drawing his version of Spider-Man.

>and makes the shittiest toys ever
His 90s toys were actually great. They looked like the comic, rather than the shit toys we were getting at the time from the regular toy manufacturers.

;--; does the comic and the series both go bad after the first episodes/S1? i just watched like 4/5 episodes and i feel really invested on the plot. Spawn Angry Cuck Revengeful aura is really funny but appealing to me.

The HBO Spawn show is the only proper way to enjoy Spawn. The comic can be dumb fun but don't expect anything with substance. The movie aged like milk in just about every regard except Clown's performance.

Do you really not know what most baseball player figures looked like before he started making them?
Thats just one example.

I bailed in the early 30s. The story was dragging but even worse was Capullo's art. Well aware others like Greg's style from that time period.

I've always loved his interpretations of other characters. It's a shame his business ventures took him away from drawing a monthly book. I don't think he gets the credit he deserves as a visual storyteller. There was pushback concerning the darker edge of his Spiderman title prior to Image. It occurred to me that maybe Marvel should have printed that book under the Epic imprint and gotten an established writer to help him out with that aspect. Perhaps even more mature content set in a different continuity. But I know he was blinded by his ego at that time and still continues to place art above story in importance.
I've got several disagreements with him but I respect his hussle and how he elevated toy sculpting in the 90s.
