Plants have other, lesser pigments beyond light absorption than just chlorophyll. They're all worse at the task under normal conditions and absorb different wavelengths than the standard green light. A sentient plant could theoretically know the difference through something closer to "taste." It also provides an avenue for plants to be racist.

Lore wise, there are multiple 'parliaments' that represent certain aspects of nature/universe and each has a champion/avatar, but DC hasn't done much with them

Green= Plant (Swamp Thing and Ivy are its avatars)

Clear/Blue= Water ( I think Mera was its avatar/ champion at one point. Not sure who it is now)

Red= Animals (Animal Man's daughter was supposed to be its champion/avatar, but stuff happened and he took the role. Not sure who has it now)

Grey= Fungi/ Death (Solomon Grundy, he might have been replaced)

Melt= Earth (champion/ avatar unknown)

Metal= Technology(champion/avatar unknown)

Blaze= Energy(fire, electricity, etc. Comics haven't revealed the champion/avatar, Lightning was its champion/avatar in the Black Lightning TV show)
