This one trips me the fuck out because this was from a single episode of an anime with like 100 episodes that only every saw release outside of Japan in Italy and never had an English dub or even fucking fansubs with pretty much zero presence in the English-speaking anime community until some guy made the connection well after SU was already airing. Yeah but it's actually cool here and Anno did his own unique twist on it. I could name at least 50 animes that are inspired by Disney and Fliescher and Russian/European films. It's just that these old anime do a good job with the visuals and Steven Universe just flat out steals scenes without adding any flair. I wouldn't mind the Akira bike slide but fuck dude does it have to be the exact same fucking shot every time, would it kill American artists to do their own take on it instead of jingling keys saying "hey look we can reference anime pls watch our show"

At the end of the day a reference is fine, but add your own flair. Cool that Anno likes Gerry Anderson, maybe if Steven Universe referenced that it'd be better. I don't see American cartoons referencing Dick Spanner anywhere.
