Batman RIP strikes the ideal Batman tone. It should be gritty but also wacky. It's the tension between the two that's so amusing.

I loved the mystery of it all. Everyone noticing these strange call-backs to old stories like the Batman of Planet X graffiti, then watching them revealed as major plot points instead of soulless empty references for nostalgia sake.
It gave us a reason to comb through back issues. Because suddenly it all mattered again.

So is the planet X actually existing too fantastical? Because modern Batman travelling with a space character and stumbling upon the planet and actually meeting the Batman he based his backup personality on would make for a funny moment. Could probably just say Batman of this planet just got radio waves from way back in regular Batman's history and those travelled to his planet from like a black hole so the distance isn't as much and inspired him to become Batman. Maybe some time loop shit happens and that results in Batman seeing the dream of Zur-En-Arrh and creating the backup personality.

Waid's brought back all these silver age stories without embarrassment, irony, or deconstruction.
Maybe he had the adventure but thought it a dream?
Seems unnecessary to bring it up at all at this point. Any love for Zur En Arrh was dragged into a ditch and beat to death by Chip Zdarsky.

What did Zdarsky do? I only really enjoyed his Spec issue 313 and maybe some of Life Story and that's about it. Everything else I heard has been middling or bad. I tried listening to his manga podcast but it came across as disinterested or misinformed as well as painful to listen to the people trying to explain manga to him.

The thing is that even in the original silver age comic, it was ambiguious that the whole thing may have been a dream. That is likely why Morrison used it.

What did Morrison mean by this?

Chip's Batman run turned Zur En Arrh into a full blown dissociative identity that regularly takes possession of Batman's body and does things on his own. Eventually the personality splits from Bruce and embeds itself into a robot called Failsafe that batman built that's so powerful it can totally beat up all the justice league even superman.
Then it teams up with Amanda Waller for reasons.
It's bad. It's very very bad.

Morrison really can't write. He just relies on "wackiness" and /co/ falls for it every time.

>>149656698
He does not use weird "pronouns". Stop perpetuating this myth.

He just stole it from Moore, as usual, who retconned Miracleman's early adventures as dream sequences.

Did they ever release Batman RIP in a regular sized trade? Asking, because I've been trying to complete my run of Morrison Bat-Epic trades in a universal format and the HC books are all different formats and styles (RIP hardcover is bigger than the Black Glove and Batman and Son HCs, Batman Battle For the Cowl and Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul was never put out as a trade, all three Batman and Robin HCs were those kind of HCs from the 10s which didn't have duskjackets, plus I don't know remember if Batman #700-702 were ever collected in a trade.

Zurr En Arhh became a literal split personality that kept trying to hijack Bruce's body and ended up being put inside a super-Amazo robot named Failsafe, which conspired with Amanda Waller to destroy all super-heroes via creating duplicates of himself that could irreversibly remove a hero's powers AND reverse time to undo any damage inflicted upon it.

In order to get woke good boy points, Grant declared himself non-binary and rejected all male pronouns. This also happened around the time that he got forced out of his dream gig running Heavy Metal magazine, after failing miserably to resurrect the book and simply used it to give Mark Waid a huge salary do nothing job to finance his legal defense against Diversity & Comics, after Waid got caught red handed bullying Antartica Press into not publishing Meyer's book via threatening to blackball any Antartica Press employee from working at Marvel.

What a completely dogshit story arc. You know a story is bad when Batman surviving a fall from orbit into a solid sheet of ice without a scratch is the least retarded thing that happens.

It's funny how often he accused Moore of plagiarizing shit (which he wasn't really wrong about, but he did it in an obnoxious way, from what I've read), but then he would just use the same stuff Moore did to try to one-up him.
