The ages are obviously not set in stone. Sometimes Darwin is 10, other times he's 12. In older seasons, they were the same age and it was shown that younger Nicole and Richard were using the early internet. Also the electronics in the show didn't seem as old then as they were now. Because the show is supposed to reference current times a lot but the ages don't change, the easiest thing the writers could do in a cartoon where it doesn't matter anyway is just make the ages inconsistent. Which is how I'd have done it, as well.
