They killed Maude EXPLICITLY to make Ned a more interesting character via making him a widow and able to date and become less of a stick in the mud.

Also... instantly regretted killing the character as they did it as an impulsive fuck you to how the actress wanted more money/be able to record her lines from home as part of a contract renegotiation. She eventually was brought back with the shit that she wanted, but they were fucked up in that they couldn't unkill Maude.
