A comedy series should not be too self-referential and cater to fans, who want to know more about the "lore" of the characters. This is what ruined Dungeon Soup. In the beginning the Barbarian was a mysterious psychopath, who tortured monsters for unknown reasons. You were able to speculate what makes him tick, whether he might even be Chaotic Evil, who targets monsters, because they are effectively outlaws.
