I don’t really have a dog in this fight, but the MC going from what I assume is a normal guy into the female rat whatever is so barely a pet of the story that it’s really only there as fap material. Doesn’t seem to enhance things any other way.

That doesn't seem like a fair critique. Much of the plot relies on this to happen. It allows for the fish out of water bits of being in a body that is not his own and he doesn't understand, serves as a reason for him to be appointed as a diplomat and gain insight into this other species(while fleshing them out for the reader), as well as being his primary motivation to restore or increasingly at least hold onto himself.

You may as well say the mom and daughter swapping bodies in Freaky Friday is barely a part of the story, just inserted for fetish reasons.
