The actual reason it failed is because the last time anyone gave a shit about the Fantastic Four was when John Byrne wrote the book 40 years ago. And before then, nobody had given a shit about them since the Lee/Kirby days. It's just a concept that most people don't actually care about or find interesting.

Also Fantastic Four just plain is not suited for a movie. It's an adventure series with a family dynamic, its better suited for TV and cartoons; something that can be episodic with serialized elements.
