Why do you think Marvel and DC circulation has declined so much? They're still releasing really strong material these days. They put some of the best comic book art in the world on a regular basis, with consistently interesting layouts and beautiful color work.

DC only has Dark Patterns and Absolute Martian Manhunter. Marvel only has Ultimate X-Men. Everything else they both publish is irredeemable dog shit.

Comic writing is bad and only gets increasingly worse. Very little reason for new blood to care for characters when the creatives don't give a shit about them either and not only actively hate them but have campaigns of negativity.

If you find a character you like you're honestly better off reading their pre-00's runs then settling for fanfics that treat them better.
