When I was a non-US kid and watched cartoons in the 90s I never did think the guns in cartoons are lasers. I always assumed they are real guns who shoot bullets.

Why?
No idea. I think I assumed they draw the lines so it is easier to see if a weapon is fired especially on small CRT TVs.

Only as a grown man did I encounter on the internet the entire censorship thing where real guns are not allowed.

Did others AS CHILDREN also assumed that these are real guns with real bullets? Maybe because we watched shit loads of prehistoric anime that did have real guns all over the place?

Of course there was plasma and lasers however they looked totally different.

How was it for US children?

The DCAU shows stuck to real guns, at first dodging censors by explicitly using old-school 1940s weapons in BTAS, and later on swapping to a more forgiving network. Laser weapons started appearing in Superman, but they were never actually the norm. Rather than being tools of censorship, the appearance of lasers in Superman signified that whoever was using them was VERY well equipped, usually by Luthor. Regular goons still got ballistics.

Ya know, Chewbacca wore a bandolier with white squares on them. I always figured those were battery packs, cuz blasters have to have an energy source to fire lasers.

Not really no.
I did think they were intended to be lethal though, kind of negating the whole purpose.
Also Serpentor impaled Duke with a big snake in the move and what was clearly meant to be his blood was an off brown color.
They weren't fooling anybody.

There was nothing to fool here for me as a kid since I remember asking my mom why [cartoons] look so different since you have movies who look like real life and then these things who are so different.

Since these where stylized characters who do not look realistic and are cell shaded their guns being yellow streaked was not a problem I always simply assumed they are normal guns only they draw the shot this way.

Also we did have 70s anime here and they did use real guns.

Serious question.
HOW?

Did you have a school class talking how
>Ah yes kids because of censorship gun controversy we are censoring guns in cartoons now here have these 10 examples.

>I could tell the difference,
HOW?
Because cartoons clearly do not look like real humans BTW.

And you clearly sound delusional. Do you even remember your childhood or did you awoke in the basement as a man child with encyclopedic knowledge of everything cartoon related?

And kids clearly where unable to see the difference between the unnamed cartoon gun and their parents gun, making this meaningless, not that I care. I love to have realistic guns in my cartoons.

Seriously if parents are so retarded that they let guns lay around the kids deserve to shoot themselves also if the parents are so retarded as to let their kids have access to drugs and chemicals the kids deserve to kill themselves.

Remember that america literally banned a kinder egg because one retarded kid died on one.
Clearly america needs to have eugenics laws to let the retarded kids die at this point.

And bicycles kill more kids every year then guns.
So do cars....

I hate the leftist media.

I didn't really spend much time thinking about it. To me, a gun was a gun whether it fired lasers or bullets. The distinction was not importantโ€”it was a pointy-shooty weapon to kill things at a distance. I'm not exactly sure what their goal was with this sort of censorship.

I did realize they were lasers, but given the yellow beams that anime guns tended to use to signify bullet paths I could 100% see people mistaking them for being intended to be regular guns, particularly in a series where the sound effects aren't as obviously lasery.

As a kid, I was generally aware of two varieties of laser beamsโ€”one was a tool for cutting, but the other was a projectile weapon. I'd played enough video games and seen enough sci-fi movies to be familiar with the concept.

Censoring violence for children's media always makes it darker. Like having villains say "destroy" instead of "kill" sounds more violent like "I'll kill you so hard there will nothing left to bury"

This is one of those things where I feel like clickbait articles in the 2000's and general forum talk made people hyper aware of it.
When it comes to censorship, I'd notice the lack of sexuality/nudity and cursing more.

Partly using โ€œ historicalโ€ guns like Tommy guns, and also coming in earlier when censors werenโ€™t as alert.
Power Rangers was so popular it got a lot of parental groups confronting Fox kids which made their censorship harsher around 94. BTAS had completed most of its run on Fox by then.

The gun Hawk is using in that pic actually IS a laser rifle. It's an XMLR 3A Laser Pulse Rifle, standard issue for Joes, in the cartoon at least.

For all the cool real world hardware Joes used, they also had tons of cool original laser wespons. I'd love to see some type of 3rd person cover shooter, but all the guns are classic weapons from the 80s toyline.

Cartoon violence came full circle, the 2000s got away with lots of edge, but the 2010s gradually kiddified everything you can't show no blood or death on screen
