A show's quality degrades by how many lesbians they can fit in it, retroactively or not.

Steven Universe's issues never stemmed from the lesbian rocks being lesbians. It stemmed from the fact that it could never drag itself away from Steven's POV, did a poor executed redemption arc for the literal space fascists, and Rebecca constantly changing and retconning shit on a whim to make Rose seem like a good person despite being a sick, twisted, and flat out evil character.

SU suffered from very obviously wanting to be a Slice of Life in a setting with like 1 or 2 fun characters. It comes off as insecure in how it didn't want to be a cartoon, but also didn't want to be anything else, so interactions were typically bland. If the gems weren't mostly so fuckable no one would care about the characters.

Steven Universe was sold to both Cartoon Network and audiences as an adventure show about magical space heroes who go to ancient temples and fight monsters each day, are also raiding their dead team member's child who sometimes also joins the adventure. It was a classic adventure series but from the plucky kid sidekick's point of view.

Then in season 2 it became a show about a fat kid and his weird looking aunts that hang around a beach town all day, he is like some kind of helpful bad luck moron that helps out the random townsfolk of the week and tends to screw up a lot. Sometimes someone from space appears, but it's mostly about a sleepy beach town. And this attracted all the adult fans and tumblr artists.

SU is really similar to 2017 Ducktales in that it was made by the network to be a high concept adventure show, and sold to the fans as a high concept adventure show, but the people making it only wanted to make a comfy slice of life series.
