Brighter blues need trunks, darker blues can push it if there's some red in the general area or lots of shading.
I think both recent movie costumes are fine enough. I disliked the Returns suit despite being more faithful on the surface because the cuts and colors feel all wrong.

The busy-ness of the unnecessary lines is there, but not the extra padding. You can see that David Coronswet's legs and torso are on the long side and the trunks definitely help break it up.
In fact, while I would prefer either a more streamlined look to them like on Routh's suit, or a boxer briefs look, versus the boxers/near board shorts we ended up with, on Coronswet what we got is probably the best look, it's the rest of the suit (the padding and the bulkiness, the collar as another anon mentioned, and the lines, that I take issue with still, having seen the movie twice in theaters.

I'm not seeing the correlation. Cap usually has a larger, longer emblem to break up the red on the torso, not to mention the sash breaking up the middle and legs. Completely different color distributions.

The FF suits always had dynamic shading to break up the large swaths of blue, and most redesigns add more detail and colors to balance things out.

Most Superman redesigns remove the color balance inherent to the original, replacing it with extraneous details that only serve to highlight what's missing.

It's funny to hear people say the costume only worked in the 30's or as late as the 70's when people would joke about the costume even back then, or if a blue tightfitting costume with trunks was a common costume in the 40's. You either embrace it or you don't.
