George himself apparently never liked the idea of there being some big war between the Republic and Sith Empire, according to him the Sith Lords just plain ruled the galaxy before they all backstabbed each other to death which is presumably when the Republic rose up afterwords.

An idea with some merit. I've wanted the old/pre-republic to lean more into Samurai shit, and some kind of Sith Empire descending into Warring States nonsense with the Jedi and the Republic rising out of the ashes feels like it could work.

EU was canon to a degree. For a while they had the GTCSDN grading structure before the Mouse took over. Most of the popular EU stuff was C-grade which implies that Lucas only signed off on it and not directly involved.

When SW was sold off, only what was formerly G- and T-grade was considered canon while everything else was labeled under the "Legends" moniker.

Hot take: the Sith ending for good is stupid and the EU was correct to ignore that element of what George was going for. The Sith and the Jedi are the Yang and Yin of the Star Wars universe, constantly swinging back and forth, taking turns with one being strong and the other being weak. It makes Star Wars feel more Eastern in a good way. Getting rid of the Sith for good is dumb.

Exar Kun was an arrogant racist asshole from the get-go; having him choose the Dark Side to save his life is cool because he was always going to make the selfish choice, so having the Dark Side be his only hope is a surefire way to get him to fall. He was always curious about the Dark Side anyway.

Anakin meanwhile has a bad dream and goes to the dark side to save Padme, with whom he has one of the worst romances in film history.

Not really. That exchange happened over several panes because Freedem Nadds tricked him a few pages before. It was pretty unnecessary, though, since by this point it was pretty obvious he'd find his way to the dark side.
