I know Mission Hill benefited from that greatly, all the characters were painted with fluorescent, glow-in-the-dark paints that were brighter than what you would see on the screen. It's part of why it cost a fuckton of money to make.

I've noticed a lot of internet animators can imitate it perfectly while a lot of actual network shows/movies that try to imitate it tend to half-ass it and it still ends up feeling digital (Saturday morning all star hits, that hulu movie "Mr Crockett")

Unfortunately I don't think that's ever gonna happen outside of maybe short sequences or special occasions, internet animators have the autism and critical eyes to make that shit themselves just because they want to. However executives are just going to go where the money is so they'll obviously pick the cheaper option. Not only that but the industry is so fucked that most people there don't even know how to animate with cels correctly or at ALL and so you end up with people pulling industry veterans out of retirement just to get the animation done
an honest fucking shame, because all those new animation tools existed to make everything easier and instead it just made people lazier

By the way, i'd like to add that it's not impossible to make good looking digital animation. Most people talk about how tween shit is the devil (canadians using it to make cheap filler fast using it absolutely didn't help) but frame by frame animation isn't that much better if your animators are underpaid, not skilled enough to pull it off, or worse, outsourced to korea. Most modern disney shows for instance are animated by Rought Draft Korea (same studio that animated Robot Jones btw!) except standards for animations back then were much different and so, nowadays, it still manages to look good. It's telling that cartoons such as Bonkers were considered cheap back then yet it absolutely mogs anything that airs on TV now. As for tweenshit, it can look great if the people animating it actually give a shit about making good animation (crazy, i know). Just look at Wander over Yonder, despite using tweens it's one of the best looking shows of it's kind, thanks to Mercury Filmworks. The best example I can give you of tv show animation suddenly turning to shit would be Star VS, which was both animated by Mercury Filmworks in the first few episodes of season 1 and then Rough Draft Korea in season 2 and beyond. The craziest shit is that I've actually seen people praise RDK animation because it looked more mature than season 1 well animated "silliness", actual insanity. At least ToonCity TRIED.
My last cent on the issue would be digital colors, it's not talked about a lot outside of art circles but tl;dr traditional colors (CMYK) are limited in contrast to digital ones (RGB), and they don't mix the same. check picrel
tradfags couldn't pick any color they wanted and throw it on a canvas and they didn't have to deal with mathematically "perfect" color blending that makes everything look dull

I'm a little sad that there's no fics/comics or games about the show planned ending. It's by far the most interesting thing about it. Lots of questions such as how did robot even rise into power, the fate of his friends, the worldbuilding around the robo/human society that never really got the time to be built upon and so forth. Sweet, glad to see you here. As for advice, it could be hard since I think it really depends on how your process is, some people draw better from doing things this way and yadayada. I guess I could talk about the line weight, In some places it's too harsh and it ends up creating visual clutter, and you could benefit from practicing line confidence. Albeit your drawings already look sketchy in general (mostly due to the presence of construction lines underneath) so i'm guessing it's not "final" linework if you were to finish it. Here's my quick go at it, I tried to clean the messier areas while also using the grays underneath to create some shading along with giving the lines more space to breathe (more prominent on her front hair and hand). To me linework is a game of finding out when to use tangent and when not to (tangents can actually enhance your drawings). Using negative space correctly can create dynamism with sharp edges, it works really well for cartoony characters. For the messy hair and blush I just tried to see if i could push her "definitely mentally unwell angry chick", but you can definitely do without it. Otherwise I really like how expressive your art is and I like your line of action!

Gumball losing all of his innocence sucked ass. Both shows have an extremely different setting and that's what I think is the key piece here. GB world is whimsical, colorful and just silly in general so what the showrunners should have done was change the episodes plots instead of gumball. And they kind of did, they managed to strike a balance in-between the two in the middle seasons until it went full cynical and shit just turned into some family guy alumni
RJ would work better with this premise, for the show setting was rather bleak, much less colorful and how the characters practically lived on an alternate earth where living, walking robots were a real thing in their society but just existed to serve and therefore were seen as lower lifeforms. That, and also cuz the show is technically a big flashback that's supposed to show you in real time how Jones lost all hope in humanity. Most people watching back then didn't know that, so it was doomed to fail.
