Down Under is a better structured though more formulaic movie, it's very much in the style of late 80s Disney when the new guard was working out Disney formula of how write animated features that would be fully realized in the Renaissance. That said, I really like the original; it has vibe that's unique to other Disney movies even of the era. I don't think Disney could make another Rescuers '77
though it does fall apart when they get to Louisiana/spoiler]

Both are just fine. But, I would say that The Rescuers is probably better as a film. It's more original. It's the last film that the old school animators really worked on. It spawned a number obvious clones and imitators. I think, in terms of filmmaking, it represents something that is more defined and daring than its sequel by far. The aspect that the sequel is best known for is being the first digitally inked film, which I won't say is nothing at all, but the film could kinda easily just not exist and Beauty and the Beast could probably just take it instead. There's a reason why Down Under is the blackest sheep of the Renaissance, it just sort of exists, and doesn't really have much of a strong identity. But, still, it's not a bad film, and I certainly like the new art a lot more than the xeroxed original. Either way, Bianca is cute and I like her.

The second has that sexy macropod Faloo...but she's not onscreen long enough or have enough speaking lines to matter. She's like Sarafina (Lion King) 2.0.

First movie. Rescue Me and it's accompanying imagery is just beautiful, melancholic, and haunting, Rescue Aid Society song is great, and Madam Medusa is sleazy-hot. First movie wins by a long shot.

I disliked that Bianca didn't have much of a role in the second and Bernard was basically "guy has to have the courage to propose to love interest who'll obviously say yes."
I feel like the second movie focused more on the kid and maybe Bernard, while the first has all three of them have defining roles in the story.

the left poster leaves so much to your imagination, you can stare at it for a long time wondering what each of the elements in it are, what is the rocket sled, why is it coming from that steamer, what's in there, why is the woman so wicked, she looks rich, and there's so much depth to the background too.

the other poster is just kind of "here are some characters in australia with uluru and some fog, get excited for Adventure Movie™", not much to look at.

Childrens media had become so tired and formularic by the 90's.

Even though that was the movie where the magic died, it still gets mentioned along with the Renaissance. RDU is a "Oh yeah, that happened too" movie. It feels like including Oliver and Company and DuckTales: Legend of the Lost Lamp in the Renaissance except it actual belongs and it predates BATB's use of CGI. But because it's a sequel that came too late, it is trivia.

I have no fucking clue what's going on in the left poster. It's composed like shit, it's more of a collage than anything. At least I can tell the right poster is for an adventure cartoon and who the characters are. The rats are tiny in the fucking corner.

I bet it especially weirds people out to learn/relearn that it came out AFTER the Little Mermaid. It's insane to try and consider the Renaissance without Mermaid, but if you include it that means there's this awkward spot with Down Under between it and Beauty and the Beast.

>There's a reason why Down Under is the blackest sheep of the Renaissance
During the Renaissance, I think people still were expecting more fairy tales or legends. Hercules and Hunchback still qualify as some sort of "tales", and Lion King was lucky.

I had only seen the first one a few like once and prefered the second one

I watched Down Under for the first time very recently since I was really young and realized how awesome it is

I would reccomend watching that one if you are deciding on which one to watch

also, there is a hidden SEX word written in the swamp or the wodden boards of the boat or something in the first movie

Now you say it, I think Penny was more fleshed up than the kid. You feel bad for him because he's a kid, but it's not the same connection we have for Penny. You want the Rescuers to help the boy, but you want to hug Penny really hard.

I'm just noticing Penny's not in the first poster. Unless I missed her. I guess they were saving the goal of the mission for the actual movie.
Also, the second one mentions the Prince and the Pauper, which I think was meant to be what eventually became Emperor's New Groove.

Why is Bernard garroting Miss Bianca?
Anonymous No.149764440 [Report] >>149764686 >>149770526
>>149764348
What happened is in the books Bianca goes from spoiled aristocrat to, as you put it, female James Bond (thought female Indiana Jones Lite is more proper). And the movie just puts her past adventures in the past, she had her character development off-screen. Unlike a few anons I see complain about this, I won't say this is good or bad, to introduce the character as already competent and likable. But it's done in movies so often because giving you someone kind and competent right away is generally a good idea, when runtime is limited.

And Bernard IS a big fat desk working nerd (but has that POTENTIAL that is revealed later). Though he is less actually fat and more of a cartoon mouse (they all get big butts).

Haven't seen the original, but I do think Down Under is underrated. It may not be on the same level as some other Renaissance films, but it's still beautiful, has some charming characters, and George C. Scott is great as McLeach, who really deserves more recognition among the Disney villains. However, I think the ending is really weak. There needed to be an extra five minutes showing Marahute reuniting with her eggs/chicks.

Oh for sure, and if Rescuers got turned into a cartoon for the Disney Afternoon, they could easily do a story of Bianca's origins.

Rescuers in a roundabout way sort of did....... except not really. Rescue Rangers came about from a scrapped idea for Rescuers 3 OR a Rescuers TV show.

If there was a real prequel show, they you'd have the problem of convincing producers to allow your main protagonist be unlikable for several episodes straight. It can be done, and can be done well. But good luck convincing producers that you could pull that off, and get good ratings.

Bernard and Miss Bianca's relationship was quite a bit different in the books than it was in the movies. For one thing, they weren't a romantic couple, basically due to class differences. Miss Bianca started out as a bit of an aristocratic cloud-cuckoolander because she was a pet mouse, not a wild one like the much more down-to-earth Bernard. She wasn't even afraid of cats, having lived with a fat old domestic one who'd lost all predatory instincts. Bernard spent the first couple of books basically keeping Miss Bianca from getting killed through her own naivete, and was more of a stalwart best friend that a potential lover.
