Then King writes several comics that are received well by critics and readers. Despite controversy/butthurt over the latter part of his Batman run he writes comics that sell well. I'm not sure why it took so long to click, he wasn't being subtle even, but with Grayson I realized Tom King basically watched Archer and decided for his "comedy" he wants to basically write Archer but superheroes instead of spies, if you imagine Lana and Archer in place of Catwoman and Batman this scene could sort of fit their usual dynamic, the thing is it doesn't read as well in plain text as it does from the voice acting of Aisha Tyler and H.J. Benjamin, and it also isn't written well relative to the characters, setting or shit generally.

Archer like Bojack is considered lowbrow for its tone, but the actual writing is usually thoughtful. Characterization and context are well utilized. Batman bringing up the Bat-object bit spontaneously has no context, no character.
There is no comedy.

Archer and Bojack have amazing voice actors and good timing, in comics the timing is in your head so it's tricky to make that kind of comedy work. Another thing that is worth mentioning is how the art carries a lot of the weight, a good example is the JLI, I don't mean any disrespect to J. M. DeMatteis, he's great, but without Keith Giffen insane work with expressions the result wouldn't be as good.

It isn’t pointless because the match still ends with Shiva declared the winner because after the knockout Dinah immediately announces she surrenders before the match can actually be called. So her mom is cured because Dinah still technically honoured the deal with Savage.

The point is that Dinah is someone who can’t just give up and back down in a fight. That’s not the person she is. Even when she’s beaten to a pulp she will just get up again for another round. She’s tough like that, just like her mother. The point of all the pages detailing her injuries and public humiliation is that Dinah is willing to suffer through all that pain and supposed disgrace just to save her mother, and it doesn’t make her weak or a loser. It actually takes incredible fortitude to do that. It would have been much easier to just let Shiva win by staying down after all that pain and humiliation with the wig pull, but it would have meant totally giving up. And that’s not the person her mother raised.

I very strongly dislike to outright hated it.

I gave it a shot and even waited for the series to come to an end before I passed judgement on it. I think that it’s very bad. The entire comic, plot, and story-beats are completely and utterly trite and predictable. From the very first issue you can tell the type of story it’s meant to be.

Tom King was trying to tell a generic Indie-Drama story of a Woman reconnecting with her mother as she battles with cancer. Black Canary’s fight against Shiva coincides with her Mother’s battle against cancer. The fight was never really about defeating Shiva, but instead it’s all about Dinah going the distance. The story was literally just plot of “Rocky” (1976). Hell, Dinah’s training was even similar to Rocky’s traditional farmland training in Rocky 4. Side note, I’m fairly certain that since Tom King was “paying homage to movies”, that to subtitle of the comic “Best of the Best” is a reference to the movie Best of the Best(1989), about an American Taekwondo team competing against a Korean team. I also think that Dinah ending the fight with a kick that Shiva just runs into herself was meant to be a Karate Kid homage. The homages aren’t problems per se, just observations.

The dialogue of the comic awful. The excessive swearing all felt horribly out character for both Dinah and her mother. The commentary was dreadful and added nothing to the fight.

I’m not a Lady Shiva expert by any means but she was written horrendously and felt the most out of character. Shiva would never say that she surrenders like in the fifth issue, I believe. Shiva is also not a showboat, she would never play-up to the crowd, and engage in childish trash-talk like a professional wrestler. Shiva would just just put Canary down quickly, efficiently, and just tell her to concede.

The only saving grace of this comic is Ryan Sook’s artwork. Even then I do not think that he was used effectively. Ryan Sook usually has much better and dynamic action scenes. This is a fight between two of the Best Martial Artists in DC and yet the fight is depicted as a lackluster mixture of Pro-Wrestling, Boxing, and UFC. The fight itself was lame and very underwhelming which is a shame because Ryan Sook is a great artist.

The final issue was one of the worst. The overdrawn scene of Dinah having an imaginary argument with her mother. You can see it coming from a mile away. It was painfully obvious that we were going to get a scene like like that from the beginning. It could’ve been a powerful scene, but Tom King ruins it his dialogue. Dinah finishing Shiva off with a kick was underwhelming as hell. I get it the humiliation of defeat, and winning by via Dinah’s surrender , and all of that. It was bad. Not to mention the commentary at the just rubs salt in the wound. The Commentator just says something along the lines of “ Sweet Cherrypie look at that Canary surrenders and Shiva’s down, that’s all folks”. It’s like, “What in The hell was that. It’s like i was told that I wasted my time and to go fuck myself.

In conclusion, I’m not sure if I can read anything by Tom King anymore. He has a few good ideas, but his execution often times ranges from questionable to outright terrible. This comic could have been interesting, but he botched it.

The Charlton characters are only the jumping point. Nite Owl owes a lot to Batman(as does Rorschach and even Ozymandias), Manhattan owes a lot to Silver Age Superman, Comedian to Captain America. Now, what is fascinating is that the Black Canary mother/daughter relationship wasn't really a thing at the time, it was more like Mama Canary highjacked her daughter's body. The more reasonable mantle passing happened after Watchmen, so arguably it's taking influence from that
