>>149825969 (OP)Hellboy/BPRD has what is probably my favorite depiction of the apocalypse in all the comics I've ever read.
Early on in the franchise there are already mentions of the apocalypse, even that Hellboy is the one who will start it, but it's seen as a thing that can be fought against and averted. And with each of Hellboy's victories and each denial of his "destiny" it seems that the apocalypse can indeed be prevented. But it creeps into the narrative more and more and before you know it the apocalypse IS the narrative as different stories and characters approach it from different angles and even those that think they could benefit from the apocalypse get swept up in it as much as any other victims. A sort of hopelessness sets in as it becomes more and more obvious that not only they won't be able to stop the apocalypse, but that it's already actively happening even if everyone is still trying to stop it. And in the end it turns out that stopping the apocalypse was never going to happen, and all the fighting and suffering really accomplished was a chance for something new to grow after the apocalypse instead of just an eternal end to everything. Everyone suffers, everyone dies, and the best you can hope for is that the next generation will live in a less shitty world.
