I hate seeing actors posing with comics. I believe a few might be genuine fans but some are just so obviously baiting for nerd cred. Frankly I will respect the first actor to come out and say "never read the damn things but I'll do my best anyways" over some flavor of the month pretending to be a hardcore fan of some character nobody's heard of.

I feel as though the “Muh True Grit” criticism runs deeper than just unoriginality, because it’s trying to graft a pre-existing narrative framework onto a character it just blatantly does not work for. “Revenge” isn’t a theme Kara can explore all that since she was never victimized. You can’t really pin the destruction of Krypton on anybody besides maybe Brainiac, but he doesn’t show up in this book. Instead WoT uses an original character in Rutheye to explore the revenge theme with Kara acting as a jaded older surrogate who learns to open up again. Not totally unpalatable, but it’s an incredibly bizarre role for Superman’s rambunctious teenage little sister figure to assume. It gets even worse if this is your first time meeting the character which is all but a guarantee for the average movie-goer this film is attempting to advertise to.

>Not totally unpalatable, but it’s an incredibly bizarre role for Superman’s rambunctious teenage little sister figure to assume
to be fair, and not to defend Tom King or anything, Supergirl's personality is anything but constant in her decades of existence. hell, her very identity is constantly changing between Kara Zor-El, Linda Danvers, Cir-El and other one-off appearances, not to mention Power Girl and her own variants. I do think it's a nice modern reimagining of Supergirl and maybe I AM partial to it because I love the art, but all in all I think it's more good than harm and that /co/ does overblow the dislike of this comic

I get that Kara’s had a wildly inconsistent character for years but I don’t think that merits just writing just anything for her. Typically the most consistent thing about Kara is her being younger and less experienced than Clark, so adapting a story where she’s not only a mentor figure to somebody even younger than her but is also a nihilistic substance abuser is just odd. It’s like if immediately following Batman Begins we got a Robin solo film where Dick Grayson helps out some juggler kid find his lost pet lion while battling through a heroin addiction.

I'm kinda amazed at this argument where it's being argued that because Supergirl didn't have a univocal characterization, which is something you're just supposing by the way, through half a century and hundreds of writers which what actually would have that? But because of that we skip straight to the conclusion that Tom King must've done a good job by characterizing Supergirl as a jaded drunk apparently known to pick up random revenge requests.
